Research On The Application Of Percentile Indicators For Excellence

At present, global research institutions are putting increasing emphasis on the study ofperformance evaluation. Bibliometric method and bibliometric indicators based on citationshave been widely introduced into research performance evaluation of countries anduniversities, ranging from the most conservative REF project in British to the mostinnovative ERA project in Australia, and they are proved to be effective in natural sciencesand scientific fields. Numerous studies and practical case show that bibliometric indicatorsare now most used for the evaluation of outputs number, academic influence andcooperation with other institutions, evaluation of high-level research performance, that is,academic excellence of institutions is still less. Especially, studies for understanding ofacademic excellence framework, indicator construction and application practice isrelatively lacking.Therefore, this paper will state from the following three aspects:(1) Sorting out excellence-oriented bibliometric indicators systematically. Basing onthe conceptual definition of academic excellence framework, collect global researchperformance evaluation projects, and analyze the methods and indicators used in theseprojects, focus on indicators that they used to evaluate academic excellence.(2) Theory and empirical research on excellence indicator-percentile. Investigate threepercentile indicators, that is, percentile rank scores, I3indicators and Top10%based ontheoretical perspective. Then evaluate research performance of some domestic universitiesand Beijing Institute of Technology with percentile indicator from InCites, and compare theevaluation results of percentile and other bibliometric indicators. Test and verify theapplicability of percentile in excellence performance evaluation empirically accordingly.(3) Visualization and analysis of excellence authors’ geographical distribution. Wereflect the authors’ cities of excellent papers from six disciplines on map with the methodpromoted by Bormann. Then analyze authors’ cities distribution and cooperation withforeign authors of different disciplines.This paper excavate and research bibliometric indicators that can reflect excellenceperformance, evaluate the performance of some domestic universities and Beijing Instituteof Technology with excellence indicator "percentile" creatively.We found from empiricalresearch that excellent indicators percentile has better potential in evaluating academic excellence from several different levels, such as institution, subject area and researcher. Weshould carry further study on percentile indicator used in altmetrics to enrich researchperformance evaluation methods.
