Objective:The purposes of this study were to describe status quo of self-management of school-age children and adolescents with diabetes and to analyze the factors that affect self-management efficacy for children with diabetes. The results can help healthcare givers to identify the need and potential need of children with diabetes and their care-givers.Methods:A purposive sampling of 12 subjects including 6 children and 6 care-givers was drawn from two medical centers. For the in-depth interview the semi-structured programming method is used to collect data.Results:1 Self-management of school-age children and adolescents with diabetes is not satisfactory.1.1 Diabetes management. The compliance of school-age children and adolescents with diabetes following the doctor's advice and self-monitoring blood glucose and physical activity is weaker than the previous one.1.2 Management of school-age children and adolescents' role. They show aggrandizement of role behavior when diagnosed diabetes in early stage. They are overly dependent on doctors and nurses or their care-givers and become uncooperative and withdraw. After a time, they looks like gradually adapted own new role. After discharge, they returned to school and pursued their studies. They went out without proper identification. They take insulin injection by their parents.1.3 Emotional management. Part of school-age children and adolescents with diabetes show helplessness, breaking the rule, noncooperation; indignation, et al.2 Schoolchildren and adolescents with diabetes and their care-giver need the following help.2.1 The families with psychological overweight burden need psychological help. Fear, desperation, guilty and worrying about the future is common phenomenon in the family.2.2 The families lack the relevant knowledge of the diabetes, nutrition knowledge for children and adolescents'growth and development.2.3 social support and social activities was neglected. Medical staff were very busy with their work, so children and adolescents'demands cannot met. The care-givers spent so much time at childcare that their life is monotonous.2.4 Diabetes mellitus is common, costly. Part of the family can afford the medical treatment.Conclusions:Reasons for the results are varied. The main reasons are disease course, the relationship of school-age children with their parents, the special cultural context etc. According to the results of the studies, it is essential for the families with a childhood diabetes diagnosis to keep in touch with healthcare givers. All the personnel in contact with school-age children with diabetes must bear duty of diabetes education. Community services network have been gradually perfected. It is one of the most urgent problems to establish juvenile diabetes association.
