Objective: To explore the thoughts and methods of "treating before the onset of diseases" with acupuncture and moxibustion in the ancient time, finish the theory research on "treating before the onset of diseases" with acupuncture and moxibustion, figure out and demonstrate the effect of vital Qi in "treating before the onset of diseases" , and supply basis for bringing forward new therapy of acupuncture and moxibustion.Method: Through referring to medical books of past dynasties and searching for related literature by computer, induction and logic organum were used.Results:1. The thought of "treating before the onset of diseases" with acupuncture and moxibustion in traditional Chinese medicine came from ancient plain thought of "treating before the onset of diseases" . It germinated at Xia,Shang and Zhou dynasty. Neijing of Chunqiu, Zhanguo period expatiated on the preventive thoughts of "treating before the onset of diseases" , which established solid theory basis for the formation and development of preventive methods of TCM and acupuncture. It developed in Shanghanlun of Qing, Han Dynasty, matured in Zhubingyuanhoulun and Qianjingfang of Tang Dynasty. Till Song, Ming and Qing Dynasty, the thought of "treating before the onset of diseases" was attached importance to by many doctors and became into a rich system after summarization and sublimation of the past doctors in theory and practice.2. The methods of "treating before the onset of diseases" with acupuncture and moxibustion used by doctors of past dynasties were as following: (1) preventing before the onset of diseases, which included preventing the occurrence of diseases at healthy condition and at the time of showing faint omen of diseases;(2) preventing changes anddeterioration after the onset of diseases, which included truncation and preventing occurrence during the diapause of diseases. (3)preventing recurrence after recovery of diseases. (4)preventing side-effect of acupuncture and moxibustion.Conclusion: When acupuncture and moxibustion were applied in "treating before the onset of diseases", protecting vital Qi was paid much attention, intervention occasion was well held, and diagnosis was forecast, which supplied proof for further research.
