Objective To ascertain if the apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene polymor- phism is associated with vascular dementia(VD). Methods The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used to detect apoE genetype in 35 VD patients, 36 patients with nondemented cerebral infarction (CI) and 40 healthy age- matched controls. Meanwhile, the serum levles of lipids, lipoprotein and partial apolipoprotein were determined. Results The increased frenquency of apoEε4 allele (P<0.01) and decreased apoEε3 allele frenquency (P<0.05) were found in both VD and CI . There was no difference between the two groups. In the VD group, the concentrations of TC, LDL-C, and apoB among different genotype groups were different, which in ε4 carrier group were higher than inε2 and ε3 carrier group. Conclusions apoE polymophysims may be associated with vascular dementia. apoEε4 allele could probably be a predisposing risk mark for the disease. It could have the similar mechanism in the pathogensis of VD and CI..
