ObjectivesTo learn the specialties of secondary medical professional education and demands of Medical and Health Institutions for different professional in Henan province,and provide a reliable basis for making full use of educational resources,modulate the specialties,meet the needs of human resources market for the secondary and primary medical personnel.MethodsThe application information to 18 ordinary secondary health schools and 19 secondary health professional schools was collected.Specialties of those secondary health professional school were gotten from their Application information.Two persons who were selected from the principals who were in charge of admission and employment,education management or medical education research in every school were investigateed by telephone,letter,interview and 2 uniform questionnaires were filled out(Questionnaire for specialties of secondary health professional schools).55 health and medical institutions are selected randomly in accordance with the level of economic development in the region,then the principal who is responsible for personnel,medical care or nursing department was investigated and one questionnaire (questionnaire for demand for diffferent professional in Henan) was filled in.129 questionnaires were sended to 37 secondary health professional schools and 55 health and medical institutions.116 valid questionnaires(61 from secondary medical professional school,55 from health and medical institutions) were gotten.Results1 The Specialties among different types of schools There are 25 secondary health schools which have specialty.The top 5 of 13 college-level specialties in those schools were:Senior Nursing(92.0%),Clinical medicine(68.0%),integrated Chinese traditional and western medicine(28.0%), pharmacy(24.0%) and Oral medicine(20.1%),Specialty in college-level are no significant difference in differant types of schools(P=0.9686) and different level of economic regions(P=0.9505).There were 32 secondary-level specialties in 37 schools which were investigated,the main were:Nursing(91.9%),Integrated Chinese traditional and western medicine(51.4%),Health care(43.2%),Midwifery(37.8%) and Pharmaceutical(35.1%).The secondary-level Specialties are no significant difference in all types of schools(P=0.7886) and different level of economic regions(P=0.4272).2.Non-diploma education and training among different types of schools. The top 5 vocational training projects in secondary health school are diploma education for primary health persormel(43.2%),training for general practitioners qualifying examination(28.8%),health care massagist training(19.0%),community nursing training(11.7%),National or Provincial continuing education project(10.0%); the advised additional training projects included professional nursing training(29.3%), popularization of health care knowledge(29.3%),maternal and infant care training(26.8%),housekeeping training(22.0%),medical literature searching and medical paper writing(19.5%).3.The secondary-level nursing among different levels of health and medical institutionsThe top 5 secondary-level specialties which have saturated in Health care unit are general duty nursing(49.1%),maternal and infant care(49.1%),midwifery(40.0%), pharmaceutical(38.2%) and medical imaging technology(32.7%).Specialties on the point of saturation have no significant difference in different levels of medical institutions(P=0.8680) and different regions(P=0.5098).4.The professional demand of different levels health and medical institutions in different areasThe top 5 urgently needed secondary-level professionals in different levels health and medical institutions are nutrition(74.5%),acupuncture and massage(40.0%), rehabilitation technology(21.8%),oral technology(9.1%) and general duty nursing (7.3%).the specialties that different health and medical institutions needed were significant difference(P=0.0232),however there are no significantly different in different economic level areas(P=0.4380).5.The new specialties which are recommended by different levels health and medical institutions in different areasThe top 5 new specialties which are recommended by all levels health and medical institutions in different areas are mental nursing(67.3%),medicine and law(25.5%), maternal and infant care(25.5%),various specialized nursing that fit in with the needs of society(23.6%) and medical assistance(21.8%).The new specialties which are recommended by different levels health and medical institutions in different level of economic development regions are no significance(P=0.3327,P=0.8419).6.The training projects that health and medical institutions at different levels and in different areas had been introducedThe top 5 training projects that had been accepted by different levels health and medical institutions were training for general practitioners qualifying examination(52.7%),professional nursing training(41.8%),national and provincial continuing education project(38.2%),Red Cross first-aid knowledge training(34.5%), medical law and sanitary legislation(30.9%).The training projects that different health and medical institutions at all levels had been introduced in different regions have no statistically significant difference(P=0.6004,P=0.9659).The top 5 new specialties that health and medical institutions at all levels hoped to add were family rehabilitation nursing guide(27.3%),evaluation and analysis of the results of medical examination(27.3%),community nursing training(23.6%), popularization of health care knowledge(18.2%) and maternal and infant care training(16.4%).The new training projects which were recommended by different levels health and medical institutions are significantly different in different level of economic development regions(P=0.0185,P=0.0052).7.The training methods which different levels health and medical institutions would like to acceptThe top 5 training methods that health and medical institutions at different levels accepted more readily are short-term training(within 2 weeks)(43.6%),long-term training(more than 2 weeks)(30.9%),web-based instruction(29.1%),teaching by correspondence(16.4%),The training methods which different levels health and medical institutions want to accept were no significant different in different level of economic development regions(P=0.5496,P=0.3818).8.The opinions of two sides of supply and demand to specialties The top 5 specialties that health and medical institutions urgently needed were nutrition,rehabilitation techniques,acupuncture and massage,oral care and general duty nursing,however,the top 5 specialties which are stetted up by secondary medical professional school are general duty nursing,integrated Chinese traditional and western medicine,health care,pharmaceutical,acupuncture and massage,oral technology.The top 5 specialties that health and medical institutions hoped to add were mental nursing,medicine law,maternal and infant care,various specialized nursing that fit in with the needs of the society and medical assistance,whereas, secondary medical professional school think the top 5 specialties which had a bright future were general duty nursing,midwifery,acupuncture and massage,pharmacy and oral technology;The top 5 new specialties that health and medical institutions hoped to add were family rehabilitation nursing guide,analysis of the results of the medical examination,maternal and infant care training,popularization of health care knowledge and community nursing training,while,at present,the non-academic education and training projects that secondary medical professional school had opened were:diploma education for primary health personnel,Training for General practitioners qualifying examination,health care massagist training,community nursing training,national or provincial continuing education project.ConclusionsRegardless of college level or secondary level,the specialties in both ordinary secondary health schools and secondary health professional schools in Henan had no differences,the same as in different areas.This suggested that in terms of specialty establishment in ordinary secondary health schools and secondary health professional schools do not met the level of local economic development,the specialty establishments lacked pertinence and flexibility.Secondary health and occupational schools are stilling focus on nursing specialty.Ordinary secondary health schools had neglected of non-diploma education.The demands for secondary-level specialties had saturated in health and medical institutions at different levels and different regions.The most urgent demands for specialties by health and medical institutions at different levels are significant different.The new specialties which were recommended by different levels health and medical institutions were not significant in different regions.The future of mental health nursing is very good.The training projects that health and medical institutions at different levels in different areas had introduced are not significant different; however the discrepancies of new training projects that they hope to add are significant different.Short-term or on-the-job training in the short,flat,fast way is more readily acceptable to the primary personnel.The two sides of supply and demand gave different opinions to specialty establishment.The specialty establishment of schools departured from market demands.
