Objectives To explore the current status as well as the influencing factors of quality of life and community nursing needs of the elderly in the urban and rural areas of Changzhi, and to study the relationships between them.Methods 1260 old people in communities of Changzhi were investigated by stratified random sampling method and asked to fill in questionnaires which included:Individual Information Sheet for the elderly; 36-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36); Nursing Needs Questionnaire; Activities of Daily Living scale (ADL). Descriptive analysis, T-test, ANOVA, multiple linear stepwise regressions and Pearson's correlation analysis were performed by the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 13.0.Results (1) The score of SF-36 of the elderly in Changzhi was 101.21±17.74. The quality of life of 91.83% of the elderly in Changzhi was at middle level, and the elderly living in the urban area got obviously higher scores than those living in the rural area. (2) The score of community nursing needs of the elderly in Changzhi was 3.35±0.79, and the elderly living in the rural area got obviously higher scores than those living in the urban area. The most needed community health services of the elderly are periodical physical examination(82.93%), safe medication use guidance(76.06%), security guidance(74.76%), establishment of health records(73.55%), and rehabilitation training guidance(72.58%).(3) Through single factor analysis, the 11 preceding factors which influenced the quality of life and community nursing needs of the elderly were as follows:gender, self-care ability, career, living style, age, marital status, degree of education, income, medical security, frequency of exercises, and chronic diseases. Multi-variable analysis results showed that what influenced the quality of life of the elderly were self-care ability, chronic diseases, frequency of exercises, income,living style, age,degree of education, career,and marital status,while what influenced the community nursing needs of the elderly were gender, career, frequency of exercises, age,and medical security. (3) The results revealed that the score of the quality of life was negatively correlated with the score of community nursing needs (P<0.05), and the correlation coefficient was 0.072-0.360.Conclusions:(1) The quality of life was at middle level for the great majority of the elderly in Changzhi, and the elderly living in the urban area had an obviously higher life quality than those living in the rural area. The old people had much more community nursing needs and the elderly living in the rural area had a higher community nursing needs than those living in the urban area. (2) The most important influencing factors of the quality of life of the elderly were as follows:self-care ability, chronic diseases, frequency of exercises, income,living style, age,degree of education, career,and marital status, while what influenced the nursing needs of the elderly mostly were gender, career, frequency of exercises,age,and medical security (3) The quality of life was negatively correlated with nursing needs.
