Land is the basic necessity for people's life. Desertification exerts negative effects not only on the construction and evolution of the sand land ecological system, but also on the life and economic development of the local people. Under the guidance of sustainable development theories, the research on desertification in typical areas and the discussion on the relationship between the sand land society's economic development and the process of ecological environment improvement not only meet the need for ecological environment improvement, but also promote the social economic development. This thesis employs natural geography, ecological restoration, landscape ecology and ecological hydrology to explore the economic models in the sand land of Western Jilin Province. The research carries magnificent theoretical and practical significance. The thesis is composed of four parts:Part One is the introduction, which includes the present situation of the sand land society's economic development, the present economic situation of the sand land in Western Jilin Province, and the problems related. This part serves as the foundation of the thesis.Part Two is the case studies. The author introduces the natural and social background of the sand land in Western Jilin Province, including its current situation, causes and characteristics. The author also analyzes the ecological support of the sand land in Western Jilin Province for social economic development.In Part Three the author analyzes the stages of the economic development of the sand land in Western Jilin Province from the aspects of the evolutionary process of the relationship between people and geography. The author also introduces four types of the sand land in terms of the stages: stable, substable, subunstable, and unstable.In Part Four the author establishes a Western Jilin Province sand land economic model, and analyzes the economic and ecological benefits that each model may bring. This is the key and innovative point of the study.
