With the fast development of consumer electronics and portable communication products forward to multi-functional, high performance and low cost consumption, the whole product system has higher and higher requirements to its main storage devices. At present, DDR SDRAM and DDR2 SDRAM are increasingly applied to some high-grade consumer electronics and portable communication products for their high data transmission rates and low costs. This will result in more and more design requirements to the DDR SDRAM and DDR2 SDRAM controller. Therefore, the design of SDRAM controller applied to both DDR and DDR2 architecture will be generally applicable to a variety of system.The crucial technologies of the controller such as Structure, Interface and Timing are explored in this article. After research on the main features inside DDR and DDR2 controller, several functional modules of controller are designed by Verilog HDL. The design is simulated and verified under Modelsim, is synthesized under Design Compiler and is implemented via Astro and Altera FPGA. The simulation results show that the controller can be fully qualified for the DDR SDRAM and DDR2 SDRAM control. Finally the design is typed out successfully.The design of controller has the characteristics of high practicality and wide applicability. It is not only easy to operate, but also suitable for control of two different kinds of memory (DDR SDRAM and DDR2 SDRAM).
