As a development trend of parallel computing, the computer cluster has thecharacteristics of cost-effectiveness and expansibility. Network medium and networktopology have an important influence on the performance of system communication. Now optical interconnection technology is widely applied in multi-computer parallelcomputing system for its high bandwidth and low latency. On the basis of the previous work in optical interconnection of our group, atwo-layer WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical interconnection networkwith simple network topology and communication protocol is proposed in this thesis.Using FPGA (Field Programmable Gates Array) and a PCI bus controller (PCI-DP)containing 16KBytes Dual-Port SRAM, a gigabit optical interconnection networkcard (ONIC) for ring network is designed, which supports the full bandwidthtransmission rate of PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) bus. Otherwise, opticalinterconnection software system and communication protocol are developed. Finally, the communication performance of the ring network is evaluated. The major achievements in this thesis are:1. With the high-speed digital cross-point switch, a two-layer WDM opticalinterconnection network is developed and network communication module isestablished. Utilizing FPGA and PCI-DP, the ONIC architecture of ring networkis improved. Design of ONIC PCB (Printed Circuit Board) has been optimizedaccording to the principle of signal integrity.2. Adopting the theory of modern EDA technology, FPGA logic design of the ONICis accomplished. The centralized design method optimizes the logic architecture.Hardware circuit implements sending, receiving, retransmitting and clearing datapackages.3. With the purpose of reducing communication latency and software overhead, thedevice driver of the ONIC is developed and the network communication protocolfor cluster is designed.4. Under different working circumstances, the average bandwidth of the ONIC istested by professional software via DMA transmission mode. The relationbetween transmission bytes and bandwidth is analyzed. On the other hand, theburst mode timing of the PCI-DP local bus is investigated via hardware testing toevaluate its hardware performance. The major innovations of this thesis are:1. The ONIC design utilizes the PCI-DP that contains plenty of storage resource. Therefore, the resending data can be fetched from board storage rather than EMSmemory when error occurs. The system communication latency is also reduced.2. With the inner FIFO (First in First out) structure, the outer FIFO is no longer usedfor receiving cache, which simplifies system complexity and improves linkperformance.3. Based on the ONIC and the digital cross-point switch, a two-layer WDM opticalinterconnection network with both simple network topology and communicationprotocol is proposed.
