Optical switching has become one of the key techniques of optical network. MEMS-based all optical switch utilizes micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology to provide strictly non-blocking photonic switching of fiber-optic traffic. All-optical approach eliminates the need for optical-to-electrical conversions, providing switching solutions that are independent of wavelength, data rate, and signal format. It has become the highly important application of optical communications. On the basis of the high-speed network interface card accomplished by our research group, a new structure for a giga-bit per second optical interconnection network has been designed using optical switch and full bandwidth peripheral component interconnect (PCI) interface cards. It can provide an interconnecting network with high bandwidth and low latency of communications for clusters system. The major achievements in this thesis are as follows:The 2×2 mechanical optical switch circuits has been implemented. One is designing electronic circuit based on RS232 serial port, the other is designing electronic circuit based on parallel port. According to the configuration, the design method of driver has been accomplished.The MEMS optical switch circuits has been implemented. A new structure for optical interconnection network has been proposed. Transmission experimentation of network has been done. The performance of the network and the optical switch has been tested and analyzed. Program of receiving and transmitting of full bandwidth PCI interface cards has been designed. Based on the familiarity with S5933 PCI bus controller chip and operation registers, Virtual Device Driver (VxD) in C++ based on Windows98 operating system in order to realize receiving and transmitting for implement PCI device has been accomplished.The research of technology and structure of MEMS optical switch has been done. Based on theoretics of optical network, the research of applications of MEMS optical switch in optical fiber digital transmission system has been accomplished. The major innovations of this thesis are as follows:Based on the characteristics of clusters, a new structure for optical interconnection network has been designed using optical switch, which eliminates the need for optical-to-electrical conversions, providing switching solutions that are independent of wavelength, data rate, and signal format.Based on the structure of MEMS optical switch and the characteristics of clusters, the performance of the network and optical switch has been tested and analyzed for the data package with different size.
