With the development of computer technology, network communication technology and digital information processing technology, and consequent revolution in scholarly communication and publishing, libraries are undergoing a period that opportunities and challenges coexist. A large increase in the volume of publication, dramatically increases in prices of serials and monographs, static or even reduced budgets make libraries' purchasing power deceases greatly. Faced with this pressure, each library has realized that it is difficult to build a comprehensive and systematic in-house collection by his own and focused on resource sharing to meet various kinds of constantly changeable document demands of users. Document delivery, by expanding access to more information resource to balance in-house collection and document demand, is regarded as the most direct and effective resource sharing activity, and combined with collection development maneuverably to provide resource backing for library information services. In view of the importance of document delivery service to library's development, it is an important topic of the study on resource sharing to study document delivery service in domestic libraries. Systematically studying the status quo of document delivery service in domestic libraries, analyzing in depth the issues and obstacles existing in the service, exploring the further measures and strategies to optimize the service, would provide guide and reference for improving the quality, management and organization of the service, thus promoting effectively the service to perfect and develop smoothly.Based on field investigation, the dissertation, by using the research methods of questionnaire, interview and observation, and also by integrated the quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis, strives to grasp exactly the status quo of document delivery service in our libraries, to systematically analyze the issues related to the service, and present some appropriate measures to optimize the service. The dissertation concentrates on two aspects: description and analysis of the status quo of document delivery in domestic libraries, and exploring the issues of optimizing the service. The change in conception of collection development and development of information technology promote the development of document delivery. It is testified that document delivery plays an important role in expanding collection, meeting patrons' information needs and offering effective and economic services. Study on Service Modes of Document DeliveryAccording to service property of document delivery organization, technologicalmeans, process of operation, main body in the document delivery chain and ways of management of document delivery organization, document delivery can be divided into many service modes. The advantages and disadvantages of each mode will be discussed in this chapter.
