Objective: The direct and indirect economic burden of cystic echinococcosis (CE) was investigated in Hydatid Permitted Hospital of Xinjiang (First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, First Affiliated Hospital of Shihezi Medical University, Yili Friendship Hospital, Changji People's Hospital, Wusu People's Hospital) to provide more useful information for the consideration of making health policy. Methods: The data of CE patients information which covered from 2004 to 2008 were analyzed by SPSS 15.0 with methods of statistics description, analysis of variance, multivariate stepwise regression analysis etc.. And the indirect economic burden was employed by the human capital method combined with Disability Adjusted Life Year (DALY). Results: A total of 2018 CE patients in those hospitals were investigated with their ages from 2 to 88 years. There were 11646.47 RMB per person as direct fee-for-service, and 153.42 RMB per person as direct non-fee-for-service. Both of them constituted the direct economic burden. On the other hand, the result showed that the indirect economic lost for CE was 11200.65 RMB per person and DALY lost as an average of approximately 1.03 per person. Conclusion: In the current study, the method in combination of human capital with DALYs was the first time trial by using of the indirect CE economic burden in Xinjiang. Corresponding policy to cope with such situation should be considered by different ages and hospital levels, which may get better balance of the national for helping the CE patients and further reduction of their economic burden.
