Professional self-concept ,as an important part of the overall self-concept,is response to the overallself-concept in in career choice and career development.When professional self-concept is built,the professionalorientation is set. Once the professional orientation forms, it will affect individual professional attitudes, andthen affect individual career choice. Thus, it is crucial to develop a positive and stable professionalattitudes in order to improve the quality of nursing ,stabilize nursing teamand promote thedevelopment of nursing science.In this paper, we will explore the current situation of nursingundergraduate professional self-concept and related factors.Objectives:This paper was based on the results of previous studies, and discussed the status of nursingundergraduates'professional self-concept, and analyzed the impact of nursing undergraduates'professional self-concept related factors.According to the status of nursing undergraduates'professional self-concept and its influencing factors, here I propose an educational theory andsome suggestions for nursing undergraduates'educators and clinical nursing teaching managers.Subjects and methods:Using survey questionnaires to medical college nursing undergraduates of year 2006-2008 inShanxi medical university without writing their names on to investigate their attitudes toward theprofessional self-concept. 630 questionnaires were issued and valid questionnaires were 594.There are three parts in the questionnaire: An individual information sheet, nursing professionalself-concept questionnaire designed by Arthur and self-designed influencing factors of nursingprofessional commitment questionnaire. T-test one-way ANOVA, multiple linear regression wereperformed by the statistical package for social science (SPSS)17.0.Results:1. Status and related situations of nursing undergraduates'professional self-concept : totalaverage score of nursing undergraduates'professional self-concept was 2.90±0.32;skillsdimensions score was 3.15±0.50; communication dimensions score was 3.10±0.45; flexibilitydimensions score was 2.96±0.45;leadership dimensions score was 2.79±0.47;satisfaction dimensions score was 2.65±0.39.Students understanding the professionalself-concept highly were 23, accounting for3.9%; students knowing the professional self-conceptmore were 135, accounting for 22.7%; 15.2% undergraduates didn't understand the professionalself-concept, and 47.8% nursing undergraduates known a little about the professionalself-concept.. 2. Gender had a great impact on nursing undergraduates'professional self-concept andsatisfaction dimensions. Whether they are the only one child in family had notable impact onskills dimensions. Whether the students were senior or freshmen had notable impact on. nursingundergraduates'professional self-concept and each part.Whether they are student cadres had asignificant effect on leadership dimensions.Whether the nursing student had attended medicaltreatment activity had impact on communication dimensions.The matriculates who are fromdifferent areas had impact on communication dimensions.3. Main factors of affecting nursing undergraduates'professional self-concept: socialsupport factors , personal family factors, schools and teachers factors.ConclusionsConclusions:1. The overall nursing undergraduates'professional self-concept reaches the middle level.Nursing undergraduates know little about professional self-concept, but the majority of them arein approval of a professional self-concept education.In the present higher nursing education andprofessional status, we should strengthen the nursing professional self-concepe education.2. The demographic variables had some impacts on nursing undergraduates'professionalself-concept.3. Regarding the influencing factors, take different measures to improve nursing professional self-concept(1) To reinforce the public to have a correct recognition for nursing profession. (2) Concern the development ofprofessional self-concept of nursing undergraduates in different grades, improve their interest in this profession.(3) Pay attention to help nursing teachers to strengthen vocational accomplishment.
