[Objective]This study takes the cross-clutural adaptation of the Revised Nurses Professional Values Scale to understand the status of professional values level of the undergraduate nursing studen t. It also discusses the serving patient volunteer activity's influence to undergraduate nursing students' professional value. This study can provide support to nursing educator for the real effect of professional value education. Then it can improve the nursing students'professional value and career quality and fulfill the society's high quality nursing service needs.[Methods]①Cross-cultural adaptation of the Revised Nurses Professional Values Scale(NPVS-R). After the translation, synthesis, back translation, expert Consultation, pretesting processes, we revised the Revised Nurses Professional Values Scale into a Chinese version.②By using the cross-clutural adaptation of the Revised Nurses Professional Values Scale (NPVS-R) to investigate a mediacal university's nursing school 2008 grade undergraduated students, analyze the status and the influence to professional value caused by demographic variables. Besides, these undergraduate nursing students were divided into the intervention group (volunteer group) and the controlled group (non-voluntary group) voluntarily,52 subjects in the intervention group and 68 subjects in the controlled group. The controlled group only took the ordinary class study and practice organized by school. Besides the ordinary class study and practice, the students in the intervention group took the volunteer activity designed for this research. This volunteer activity was from July,2010 to December,2010, in the high-quality nursing service demonstration wards of China-Japan Friendship Hospital, including making the bed, measuring the vital signs, therapy of hot and cold, hygiene, health education and so on, and the serving time accumulated for 160 hours. Before and after the intervention, the level of nursing professional value was collected by the cross-clutaral adaptation of the NPVS-R in the intervention and the controlled group. Statistical analysis was performed with the statistical package for Social Science (SPSS 13.0). Statistical methods included descriptive statistics, t-test, and covariance analysis.③According to the research object, we took 5 students from each group to interview randomly. Through this interview, understand the mechanism of voluntary activity on the undergraduate nursing student's professional values. We also understood why the controlled group students do not take the volunteer activity.[Results] ①The average score of the investigated undergraduate students'professional value is 3.72±0.42. It lays in the moderate level a little high. Among the 5 factors of the professional value table, "care" gets the highest score, which mean score is 4.03±0.53; "Activism" gets the lowest score, which mean score is 3.39+0.44. The item with highest score is "Confront practioners with questionable or inappropriate practice", the mean score is 4.51+0.55; The item with lowest score is "participate in activities of professional nursing associations", the mean score is 3.07±0.82.②There are no statistically significant differences between the undergraduate nursing students'professional values and political status, Family residence, is only child or not and so on.③There's no statistically significant difference between the 2 times test result of the experiment group's nursing students (P>0.05). It shows statistically significant differences in the 4 factors including care, activism, trust, Professionalism (P<0.01). It has statistically significant difference after comparing the two groups'test result by the analysis of covariance (P<0.05).④The qualitative research results show:Volunteer activity of serving patient is the inner mechanism of nursing students'professional value, which through the nature of practice, the environment of practice, clinical teacher and patients'attitude to effect the nursing students'professional value.⑤The reason why Non-volunteer do not participate in volunteer activity of serving patient including the inner reason of self develop and the outer reason of volunteer activity.[Conclusions]①Nursing professional values of undergraduate students is at a higher level in general.②There are no statistically significant differences between the undergraduate nursing students'professional values and political status, Family residence, is only child or not and so on.③The volunteer activity of serving patients can improve the undergraduate students' professional value.④The education of the nursing students'professional value should practice with theory and be self education primarily.⑤The organize model and Incentives of volunteer activity of serving patients need to be better.
