Objective:1. To understand the facts of diabetes and its risk factors and to conclude the preventive methods of diabetes among municipal community citizens in Jinan, Shandong province.2. Diabetes health education was performed among municipal community citizens in Jinan and the effect of intervention was described and appreciated for discussing asuitable form of the diabetes health education.Methods:1. According to national programme of diabetic epidemiological research, the study randomly assigned 2190 citizens aged 20-74 years in three communities of Jinan city for screening impaired glucose regulation and type 2 diabetes mellitus during from June, 2008 to August, 2008. The clinical parameters, such as fasting plasma glucose, 2h postprandial plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure, body weight and insulin were assessed. Diabetes mellitus was diagnosed according to 1999 World Health Organization criteria.2. Blood samples were immediately centrifuged and plasma and serum samples were sent to the Central Laboratory of Qilu Hospital for testing. Hemoglobin Alc was determined by means of high-performance liquid chromatography. Serum glucose was measured with a standard glucose oxidase reference method. TC, HDL-C, and TG levels were measured using an enzymatic color process. LDL-C levels were calculated with Friedewald formula. Urine albumin was measured with radio immunoassay test.3. Diabetes health education was performed among municipal community citizens that were divided observation group and control group in Jinan and the effect of intervention was described and appreciated for discussing asuitable form of the diabetes health education.4. For all statistical analyses, we used the SPSS11.0 program (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA). Unpaired Student's t test was conducted to determine the significance of observed differences between the means of clinical parameters of different groups. P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.Results:1. The morbidity rate of diabetes in the municipal community citizens in Jinan is approximately 9.4%, which of the male was higher than the female, obviously higher in the group elderly than 50 years, in term of occupation teachers and doctors were of higher risk than labors. But those who have family history appeared a higher morbidity rate of 26.2% with a significance difference compared to physical labors.2. Medical compliance behaviors in the municipal community diabetic patients who have accepted diabetes health education have been improved significantly than that in the community diabetic patients who have not accepted it (P < 0.01). In the mean time, IFG and 2HPG have decreased markedly in the observation group(P < 0. 01).Conclusions:1. Diabetes is one common and frequently occurring disease in the community of our city. The inducement and risk factors were sexage, family history, physical and mental factors.2. Diabetes health education in the community is effective access to enhance the awareness of diabetic prevention and treatment and improve control circulation of diabetes.advices:1. To establish health archives for current diabetic patients, high risk population morethan 40 years old, obesity, with diabetic family history, keeping up brain labor, and with stress, give them periodic following and direct medication.2. To hold all kinds of diabetic health education in the communities of Jinan, promotecivilized, healthy life habits and behaviors, and provide health consults.
