Objective To assess the prevalence of hyperuricemia and the difference from urban and rural areas of Qingdao; further to study the influence factors of hyperuricemia and the relationship to dietary factors. Methods Residents aged over 35 years old from six districts of Qingdao were randomly selected and examined. General conditions, life styles, behaviors, and family histories were investigated. And physical check-ups and corresponding lab index were rendered. Data was analysed by SPSS 15.0.Results The prevalence rate was 18.1% and normative rate was 18.3% for all, higher in men (22.52%) than in women (15.32%) (X~2=40.12, P<0.001).The prevalence in urban areas was 19.93% and in rural areas 16.42% (X~2=10.05,P< 0.01).Only 8.90% of the people with hyperuricemia were aware of the condition. The results of the Logistic Regression showed that high income, overweight, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, beer intake and seafood intake were the risk factors of hyperuricemia. Conclusion The prevalence rate of hyperuricemia in Qingdao city was high, with a low awareness. Health promotion on lifestyle changes may help to increase the public awareness and reduce the prevalence of hyperuricemia.
