OBJECTIVE: nursing human resources allocation can affect the satisfaction of patients with the nursing service, which is an important part of curative activity, and has a direct relation with its quality. At present, the bed/nurse ratio is used to assess the nursing human resources allocation. Usually, the foreign standard ratio is 1:0.9-1.6, but in our country it is equal 1:0.4, a standard which was set up by Ministry of Public Health in 1978. Due to specific characteristic of each department, the nursing time of the same nursing-grade level patients is different and it is unsuitable to use the same bed/nurse ratio in all departments. In this study we calculated the bed/nurse ratio by measuring the direct and related nursing time of different nursing-grade level patients in each department in Zhongda Hospital, which will provide basis for scientific and reasonable allocation of nursing human resources.METHODS: 1.to get the message of the status quo of nursing human resources allocation by consulting the data stored in personnel department and nursing department, academic career constitution, age, professional title, post distribution and working content of nursing personnel.2.each direct nursing item was measured for average nursing time by the means of observer-measuring and operating nurse self-observation recording on 300 first nursing-grade and second nursing-grade patients respectively in 24 wards in Zhongda Hospital from November 15, 2005 to February 15, 2006 and was operated on different patients by different professional title nursing personnel for 30 times to obtain the daily direct nursing time and related nursing time of every first or second nursing-grade patient and then calculated the daily nursing time(daily nursing time = direct nursing time + related nursing time ) and the required number of nurses in each department according to the formula that the number of nurses = (daily average nursing time/daily working time of each nurse )×resting coefficient×motion coefficient.
