Objective:To investigate the effect of acupuncture combined with Chinese herb on bone metabolism in postmenopausal women.Methods:40 cases of postmenopausal women were randomly divided into control group which received only acupuncture therapy (n=20) and treatment group which received acupuncture plus Chinese herb therapy (n=20). In the two groups, shenshu (BL23), mingmen(DU4) and sanyinjiao(SP6) were punctured twice every week, and auricular point "G4" area (antitragus-double) were pressed by auricular seed pressing and stimulated 3 times each day, continuously for 2 months . In treatment group, patients were ordered to take herbal capsules, 4 capsules(containing yin -yanghuo(epimedium) and nvzhenzi(fructus ligustri lucidi))tds, continuously for 2 months. Prior to and after treatment, the symptoms were quantified by osteoporotic symptom scores and a modified Kuppermann-index and serum concentra -tion of estradiol(E2), osteocalcin(BGP) and interlukin-6(IL-6) were analysed by radioimmunoassay in the two groups.Results:After 2 months' treatment, (1) osteoporotic symptom scores lowered significantly in two groups, but the treatment group was more significant than the control group(P<0.001). Kuppermann-index lowered significantly in two groups , and there was no significant difference in two groups(P>0. 05).
