Objective: To research the clinical effects and mechanism of rotating and pressing Manipulation in supine position to vertebral artery type of cervical spondylosis and offer a simple, economical, safe, efficient treatment.Subject and Methods: Based on the criteria of diagnosis and TCM differentiation syndrome in the guide on clinical study of new Chinese herbs (issued by the National Health Department) , 60 cases which were diagnosed as vertebral artery type cervical spondylosis were adopted, and randomly divided into two groups: Treatment group including 30 cases and Control group including 30 cases. Treatment group was treated with the rotating and pressing Manipulation in supine position every three days. Control group was treated cervical spinal traction in a sitting position every three days. After ten times, two groups were respectively examined with Transcranial Doppler Sonography, Hemorheological parameters, X-ray .The results were compared with those before treatment. Results: The efficiency in the treatment group was 100% and was statistically compared with that in the control group, whichis 80%. The difference was significant (P<0.05). To those withlow blood flow velocity of vertebral artery in the treatment group, such as peak systolic velocity (Vs), end diastolic velocity (Vd), mean blood velocity (Vm). Blood flow velocity of vertebralartery increased. To those with fast blood flow velocity of vertebral artery in the treatment group, blood flow velocity of vertebral artery decreased after treatment. Compared with the control group, the treatment group was statistically significant(P<0.05 or P<0.01) in the changes of whole blood viscosity (highand low shear rate), plasma viscosity, erythrocyte electrophoresis time etc.The treatment group was better than the control group in improving the cervical spinal curvature after treatment and thedifference was statistically significant (P< 0.05 or P< 0.01).Conclusion: The rotating and pressing Manipulation in supine position have a dual-effect in adjusting the blood flow velocity of vertebral artery. It can improve the blood circulation of head, decrease the blood viscosity, and reconstruct cervical spinal curvature.
