Water is one of the important restrictive factors in arid and semi-arid areas. The problem of water storage must be resolved firstly when the ecological plants wanted to be replanted in this area.Water-storage and controlled-released film(WSCF), a new high-tech product of China "863" Program, is a sort of functional films made from compound materials of large molecules. "Packing water" ,water packed with this kind of film,is buried around the roots of the plants as "under-ground reservoir" to delay diffusion time and velocity of the injecting water and to keep high water content in soil for a long time.In the spring of 2003, WSCF was used in afforestation trial in wulanbuhe desert, Inner Morgolia, Qing shuihe town in Hohhot city, and kulun Qi in Tongliao. The result showed that the trial with WSCF was obviously better than without it in survival rate and growth (high and diameter). In the soil of different depths, the water content increased in using WSCF depth , which derived from the trial in Wulanbuhe desert. In the nursery of Forestry Research Institute of Tongliao in 2004, WSCF was used in 6 northern afforested plants: Picea asperata, Platyladus, Sabina vulgaris, Platydadus orientalis,Caragana microphylla, Ligustrum obtusifolium .We draw some conclusions and offer scientific proofs for the exploitation of this kind of material through large of the data such as the effect on water content in soil, the effect on the survival rate, growth intrement, biomass and leaf water content of these six plants.
