Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation is a review of the literature on the subject of employee engagement with a focus on the nursing profession through the lens of systemic psychology. In the past, researchers have extensively studied burnout and its consequences. Within the more recent past, researchers have started to study burnout's positive opposite, engagement. While there have been numerous studies conducted on employment engagement, very few focus specifically on engagement and the nursing profession. Engagement is especially important in the healthcare setting where nurses, as the frontline staff within hospital settings, see patients more often than anyone else in the hospital. This review includes employee engagement across the professions, but directs its primary attention toward nursing and recommendations provided for future nurse-based engagement research and application.
