Eleven phenolic acids and three flavonol glycosides were isolated from the aqueous extracts of Salvia prionitis , Sal via flava and Sal via cavaleriei. On the basis of chemical and spectral analysis, their structures were determined as isoquercetin(1), rutin(2), rosmarinic acid(3), salvianolic acid A(4), salvianolic acid B(5), isosalvianolic acid C(6), salvianolic acid C(7),methyl rosmarinate(8), R-(+)-β-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-lactic acid(9), protocatechuic aldehyde(10), salviaflaside methyl ester(11), salviaflaside(12), astragalin(13) and caffeic acid(14). Salviaflaside methyl ester(11) and salviaflaside(12) are two new trace depsidic glycosides isolated from Salvia flava. This is the first example of a caffeoyl depsidic glycoside. Compounds 1-10 were isolated from Salvia prionitis, and 1, 13, 14 from Salvia cavaleriei for the first time. The β-D-acetyl glucosides of acetylated salvianolic acid A, B, isosalvianolic acid C and rosmarinic acid, and of (3,4-dihydroxy phenyl) acetic acid, (2,4,6-triacetoxyl phenyl) acetic acid, were synthesized and their antioxidative effects were examined.Compound 36, a polyphenolic 2-phenyl benzofurane, was synthesized using phloroglucinol as starting material. Two synthetic routes have been probed and 16 compounds, including intermediates, were synthesized. Most of them are new compounds. The benzofuran nucleus of the target compound 36 was constructed by a simple oxidative cyclization. The structures of Prionitiside A and B were revized by comparing their spectral data with that of compound 36.
