Cold is one of the six influences of the natural environment. The cold-evil, one of the six evils, is the common pathogenic factor of diseases. Before the Eastern Han Dynasty(25-220), People thought that cold is one of the most important causes to induce exogenous diseases. Cold syndrome was paid much more attention and warming and cold-expelling methods were widely applied. But from the Jin and Tang Dynasty, the heat-reducing methods began to prevail. After the theory of concerning the treatment of epidemic febrile diseases was founded, the cold syndrome and methods to treat cold syndromes was neglected. Today, people use more medicines of cold nature to treat exogenous diseases and researches are paid more attentions to these drugs'anti-microorganism effects. But this has exceeded the proper limits.Cold is a common phenomenon in the universe. People often suffer from cold-evil and cold syndromes can be easily seen in daily medical experiences. The late TCM expert Liuduzhou once emphasized that cold-evil be paid adequate attentions again, and he pointed out a new concept of disease——"air-conditionging Shanghan". Pay attention to cold-evil and cold syndromes, we must pay attention to Zhangzhongjing, pay attention to Zhangzhonging's Treatise on Febrile Diseases and Miscellaneous Diseases.1 Cold and cold-evil1.1 What is the meaning of word"cold"?"Cold"is a pictograph in Chinese characters. It means temperature is low, water freezes, man in a house, use hay to keep out of the cold. In English, it means of temperature much lower than that of human body.1.2 Cold and cold-evil1.2.1 Cold and cold-evilCold is a kind of sense. The sense of cold is different among people according to their ages, living places, and their constitutions.Cold is one of the six influences of the natural environment and is a normal climatic variation of nature. All things of creation cannot live without cold. But if the c1imatic variations are too unusual, the occurrence of the natural cold is so excessive that people can not adapt to it, such cold will affect the human body and cause diseases. The cold under such circumstances is then called"cold-evil".1.2.2 Cold of Tian and of DiThe concept of"Cold of Tian and of Di"was put forward by Keyunbo, a famous doctor in Qing Dynasty."Cold of Tian"refers to meteorological cold, closely related to temperature and the sun's rays."Cold of Di"refers to cold and damp dwelling places and cold nature of water.
