The main feature of constipation is that the excrement remains in the large intestine too long, that the food residue lodges in the human intestines and cavities for a lengthy period. The incidence of constipation increases along with aging. The elderly are particularly prone to constipation due to the physiological changes caused by aging, such as the weakened chewing ability that changes the dietary habits. The physiological changes are compounded by the chronic diseases that cause the deterioration of organs and the constricted movement of the human body, and by the problem of the simultaneous taking of various kinds of drugs. The three principal symptoms of constipation are the smallness of the feces, its hardness, and the difficulty of defecating. Researches have shown that constipation can have impact on the entire bodily functions and will cause various diseases. It also accelerates the aging process of the human body and reduces the longevity of human life. Constipation is a common and frequent disease;the middle-aged people and the elderly with the disease are especially suffering from its detrimental impact. Thus, we should pay attention to constipation. This paper is divided into three sections: epidemiology, literaturereview, and clinic practice. The section of epidemiology explores, based onthe survey undertaken in the Northern part of Taiwan, the factors that leadto constipation. The section of literature review analyzes ancient Chinesemedical books and contemporary published journal articles to learn the past and present achievement of constipation therapy and anti-aging practice. The section of clinical practice investigates the constipation patients' taking Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan and Pi-Shen-Kang as therapeutic drug in the attempt to understand human fitness and oxidative stress, free radicals and the metabolism of lipid peroxides from the perspective of bioenergy. Then, an initial explication will be put forward on the Pi-Shen-Kang' s therapeutic anti-aging and constipation-preventing effects.—Epidemiology: the survey was undertaken in the Northern part of Taiwan Aim: Undertaking a survey of constipation epidemiology and analyzing the relevant factors of epidemiology in the Northern part of Taiwan will serve as the reference materials for the public health, disease control, and the clinical treatment of constipation. Method:(—) Carrying out a questionnaire on the constipation epidemiology and gathering the statistics of the questionnaire.(H) Selecting one hundred-thousandth of the population of the Northern part of Taiwan and distributing 500 questionnaires.Result: 500 questionnaires were distributed, 256 were retrieved, and the valid rate of the questionnaire was 77. 7%. The studied result of the returned questionnaires shows that age, jobs, living area, self-aware health condition—mental attitude, the quantity of vegetable consumption, and exercise status all have impact on constipation. Further logic regression analysis shows that age and diet have impact on this disease of the patients. H Literature review: Gathering and analyzing ancient Chinese medical books and published medial journal articles with the attempt to learn the past and present achievement of constipation therapy and anti-aging practice will serve as the reference materials for inquiry into and treatment of aging and constipation. — Clinical practice:A research on the anti-aging treatment of patients suffering from constipation who take the medicine Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan 20 and Pi-Shen-Kang 25 Subjects: 45 middle-aged and elderly constipation patients were randomly chosen from the Taipei Shr-Dai Chinese Medicine Clinic and Cheng Li-wen Chinese Medicine Clinic: 20 males and 25 females who have been suffering from constipation for more than one year and did not take drug for smoothing defecation in the past two months. Method: (—) the criteria for including the patients in the investigation:1. The patients, on regular and normal dietary condition, suffer from the smallness of the feces, its hardness, and the difficulty of defecating, and this symptom has lasted for a period of time, causing ailment. This means symptomatic constipation. The patients defecate less than two times a week, and the feces are hard.2.The patients are older than 45 years old(H) the criteria for excluding the patients from the investigation: l.The patients suffer from constipation caused by enteral organicblockage: congenital megacolon, rectal and colic tumor, colic volvulus, insufficient length of the colon, intestinal adhesion, adult megacolon, ovarian endometriosis, and etc.2. parenteral organic constipation: parenteral tumor compression, suchas ovarian cyst, hysteromyoma;cerebral disorder, such as Parkinson, braintumor, cerebrovascular disorder;endocrine or metabolic disorder. The diagnosis of the patients can be based on their medical history, thehealth checkup report, and relevant medical examinations to gain theknowledge of whether the patients are suffering from the diseases mentionedabove.Research one:—Aim: to learn the impact of Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan and Pi-Shen-Kang on lipidperoxides and oxidative stress.__ Methods:(—) The blood test was conducted professionally by Han Shr Functional Medicine Laboratory.(ZL) The test: the patients should stay on empty stomach for 8 hours before taking the blood test.(JEE) The blood tests of the patients were conducted before and after they have taken the treatment medicine for a prescribed period of time. H Result: (—) The explication of the result by correlation statistics:1. SOD: Using correlation statistics, the SOD obtained from the blood testing of the patients before taking Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan and after taking it for two months is computed by Chi-square test, and we learn its P value >0. 05. The result is that Ma-Tz-Ren-Uanas a therapeutic drug has no obvious relevance to the existence of SOD. The SOD obtained from the blood testing of the patients before taking Pi-Shen-Kang and after taking it for two months is computed by Chi-square test, and we learn its P value <0. 05, making significant difference. The result is that Pi-Shen-Kang as a therapeutic drug has obvious relevance to the existence of SOD.2. f-Thiols: Using correlation statistics, the f-Thiols obtained from the blood testing of the patients before taking Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan and after taking it for two months is computed by Chi-square test, and we learn its P value <0. 05. The P value of serum GSHPx obtained after Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan therapy does not achieve the significant level of 0. 05 (p<0.05). There is no marked difference in the therapeutic observation of pre- and post-therapy serum GSHPx;Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan fails to make the p value tend to the standard value (726). Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan makes no significant improvement of serum GSHPx in its therapeutic effect. The significance of the P value of serum GSHPx obtained after Pi-Shen-Kang therapy is 0.00, achieving the significant level of 0.05 (p<0. 05). There is marked difference in the therapeutic observation of pre- and post-therapy serum GSHPx;Pi-Shen-Kang can make serum GSHPx tend to the standard value(726). Pi-Shen-Kang makes significant improvement of serum GSHPx in itstherapeutic effect. We can make some findings based on these results: 1. the MDA value producedin the elimination of free radicals can be reduced if the patients take Pi-Shen-Kang with the purpose of treating constipation. This suggests that Pi-Shen-Kang is anti-aging and can be used to improve blood circulation and to reduce pigmentation. 2. The SOD value can be increased if the patients take Pi-Shen-Kang for the purpose of treating constipation. Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan shows no sign of increasing the SOD value. SOD can eliminate the excessively produced free radicals in the human body and protect the cells from detrimental effects. This suggests that Pi-Shen-Kang is anti-aging and cancer-inhibiting. 3. f-Thiols, GSHpx-Red and GSHpx-Ec can be markedly improved with the taking of Pi-Shen-Kang in treating constipation, which indicates that anti-oxidative stress is increased in the body, that the damage caused by the reactive oxygen species is mitigated, and that this drug can detoxify. F-Thiols is an indicator of measuring the anti-oxidants in the body.Research II —Aim: research on the relation between fitness and Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan andPi-Shen-Kang by using bioenergy measurement meterH Apparatus: ARDK is a meridians diagnosis instrument manufactured by Jr-Shian Corp. and Jin-Kuei International Meridian Diagnosis Research Center H Methods: to measure and analyze with bioenergy diagnosis instrumentThe positive pole of the electrode is placed in the right hand of the patient. The experimenter holds the measuring bar with cotton stopper that is wet with saline solution. The measuring bar with cotton stopper that has been wringed is placed into the working channel of the electrical panel as the negative pole. The electrical panel is attached to the computer tjyformy four quadrant, and the computer software is set to compute the relevant attribute value. The requirements for the patients as the investigatedsubject is that they cannot drink alcohol, drink coffee, sleep and eat irregularly and take strong tonic two days before they undergo this diagnosis. Moreover, they have to remain on an empty stomach or eat two hours before the diagnosis, and they cannot do vigorous exercise at least one hour before the diagnosis;for the female patients, they have to make sure they are not in the menstruating period. All the patients have to take off all their metal stuffs, such as watch and ring, and expose their feet. They are placed in a quiet and undisturbed environment where they lay resting for ten minutes. Then, the experimenter rubs the patient' s skin of the part that will be diagnosed with cotton.wet with 95% alcohol..These patients are investigated before they take the therapeutic drug, taking it for one month, and for two months respectively. K Result:(—) The explication of the result by inferential statistics: Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan: The result shows that there is no marked difference of therapeutic observation of fitness in the patients before taking the drug and after taking it for one month, before taking the drug and after taking it for two month, and after taking the drug for one month and for two months. Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan cannot make the p value tend to the standard value (40). The therapeutic effect of Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan cannot improve the fitness significantly.Pi-Shen-Kang: The result shows that there is marked difference of therapeutic observation of fitness in the patients before taking the drug and after taking it for one month, before taking the drug and after taking it for two month, and after taking the drug for one month and for two months. Pi-Shen-Kang can make the p value tend to the standard value (40). The therapeutic effect of Pi-Shen-Kang can improve the fitness significantly.(H) The explication of the result by correlation statistics: Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan: The result shows that there is no marked difference in the measurement of fitness before taking Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan as therapeutic drug, after taking it for one month and for two months. This shows that there is no obvious relevance between fitness measured before taking Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan and after taking it for one month, before taking Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan and after taking it for two months, and after taking it for one month and two months. Pi-Shen-Kang: The result shows that there is marked difference in the measurement of fitness before taking- Pi-Shen-Kang as therapeutic drug and after taking it for one month, after taking it for one month and for two months.. The p value obtained before the patient takes Pi-Shen-Kang and after he takes it for one month, and after he takes it for one month and two months, achieve the significant level of 0. 05 (p<0. 05). This shows that there is obvious relevance between fitness measured before taking Pi-Shen-Kang and after taking it for one month, after taking it for one month and for two months. The conclusion derived from all the above discussions is that the fitness of the patients taking Pi-Shen-Kang as a therapeutic drug for constipation increases with the measurement of the meridian diagnosis instrument. This indicates that the Yuan Qi of the patients has increased. Ma-Tz-Ren-Uan shows no such effects. Conclusion:1. This paper is invested in the discussion of the impact treating constipation has on lipid peroxides and anti-oxidative stress.2. This paper also probes into the impact treating constipation has on Yuan Qi of Chinese Medicine with the application of diagnosis instruments.
