Objective:This study aimed to explore the associations between the theory of Yunqi and the tendencies of human acquired disease, which was according to the traditional Chinese medicine, namely’man and nature are corresponded’in the Huang Di Nei Jing.This study attempted to classify diseases based on the criteria of western medicine, which is different from previous studies that diagnostic classifications were according to Chinese medicine.This is a systematic research on the relationships between people born in different five circuits, dominant qi or guest qi and the tendencies of human acquired disease.Methods:A total of22,245inpatients cases from1998to2007were obtained from Dongzhimen Hospital, the first affiliated hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The patients aged0-102years. The case information included ID number, date of birth, discharge diagnosis and the second diagnosis, etc.Nonparametric chi-square test was adopted to examine the impact of date of birth in different qi motion of the heavenly stems and earthly branches on the onset of acquired disease.Results:This study defines the influence of qi motion of the heavenly stems and earthly branches at birth on the onset of acquired disease, particularly in the heart-system disease and lung-system disease.Specifically,(i) The heart-system disease and lung-system disease were associated with heavenly stems, dominant qi and guest qi (including Si Tian and Zai Quan)(P<0.05).(ii) The kidney-system disease was associated with heavenly stems, dominant qi and guest qi (P<0.05).(iii) The liver-system disease was only associated with heavenly stems (P<0.05).(iiii) The spleen-system disease was only associated with guest qi of Si Tian and Zai Quan (P<0.05). In a summary, no integral conclusion could be drawn to better explain the mechanism of the influence of qi motion of the heavenly stems and earthly branches at birth on the tendencies of acquired disease of internal organs.
