The global financial crisis that broke out in 2008 brought a huge impact on the economic development of various countries, but the performance of different countries(regions)in the face of the impact varies. In recent years, the external environment of China’s economic development has become increasingly complex, and it is important to enhance economic resilience in order to stabilize the economic fundamentals.Taking the 2008 global financial crisis as the time point, this paper adopts the measurement method proposed by Martin to study the characteristics of regional economic resilience and its spatial and temporal evolution at three scales: provincial, municipal and county in China, and to investigate the spatial correlation of regional economic resilience at multiple scales. From the perspective of evolutionary economic geography,a theoretical analysis framework of regional economic resilience influencing factors is constructed, and the influencing factors of regional economic resilience under different periods, regions and types of cities are studied based on urban panel data at the prefecture and city scales, and the main findings are as follows.(1)The spatial distribution characteristics of economic resilience at the provincial, municipal and county levels in China are basically consistent over the three periods, with the overall performance showing a slight increase in the level of economic resilience, with the central and western regions being better than the eastern and northeastern regions. From the time scale,China’s regional economic resilience under multiple scales all show a small increase year by year and a slight decrease in 2020;the proportion of low resilience level regions keeps decreasing, and the dispersion of the distribution of economic resilience level in each region increases. From 2008 to 2020,China’s regional economic resilience as a whole shows that the central and western regions are higher than the eastern and northeastern regions;the old industrial bases and resource-based cities are significantly lower and most significant after 2015;the economic resilience level of the northeastern region is significantly lower, and the distribution is dominated by low value areas by 2020.(2)In terms of global spatial auto-correlation,the overall spatial pattern of regional economic resilience in China shows a process of change in which the economic resilience linkages between regions are strengthening and the spatial correlation is becoming more and more significant.Locally, the clustering types are mainly high-high and low-low,and the center of gravity of the high-high type area gradually shifts to the area south of the Yellow River, while the low-low type area shows a significant expansion trend, moving from southwest to northeast.(3)The study on the influence mechanism of regional economic resilience finds that the effects of specialization, related variety and unrelated variety on China’s economic resilience are significantly positive during the resistance and recovery periods, and the effects of specialization and related variety are significantly positive during the adjustment period. For the eastern region, unrelated variety is significantly positive in the resistance and recovery periods, specialization and unrelated variety are significantly positive in the adjustment period, and related variety is significantly negative;for the central region, related variety is significantly negative in both the resistance and recovery periods, and specialization and unrelated variety indices are significantly positive in both the recovery and adjustment periods;for the western region, unrelated variety is significantly positive in both the resistance and recovery periods, and specialization is significantly positive in the adjustment period;for the northeastern region, specialization are significantly negative in the recovery period, related variety is significantly positive, and both are significantly positive in the adjustment period. The indexes of specialization and related variety are significantly positive in the resistance period for provincial capitals and cities above sub-provincial level;the indexes of specialization and related variety are significantly positive in the recovery period and adjustment period for resource-based cities and old industrial bases, and the indexes of unrelated variety are significantly positive in the resistance and recovery periods;the indexes of specialization and related variety are significantly positive in the resistance period for general cities, and the indexes of unrelated variety are significantly positive in both the resistance and recovery periods.Unrelated variety plays an important role in contributing to regional economic resilience during the recovery and adjustment periods of the four major economic sectors, and during the resilience and recovery periods of resource-based cities and old industrial bases, and cities in general.(4)The findings of the study on the spillover effect of industrial structure on economic resilience show that the regression coefficients of unrelated variety in the resilience period and related variety in the recovery period are positive but insignificant, while specialization, related variety and unrelated variety in the rest of the study period all play a significant positive role in enhancing the level of economic resilience in the surrounding areas. Therefore, this paper studies the spatial and temporal pattern characteristics of regional economic resilience from three spatial scales: provincial, municipal and county, and constructs a theoretical framework from the perspective of evolutionary economic geography,so as to study the influencing factors of regional economic resilience in different periods. The study shows that: in the process of economic development, more attention needs to be paid to the role of unrelated variety, and regional economic resilience should be enhanced through cross-sectoral regrouping of industries and disruptive innovation;when coordinating economic development strategies, regions should not only consider their own internal industrial structure characteristics and related factors, but also pay attention to the impact of inter-regional spillover effects on local development, continuously optimize industrial structure, vigorously develop leading industries, and seek industrial transformation and innovative development. At the same time,we seek industrial transformation and innovative development,so as to achieve regional coordination and cooperation. |
