| The greatest potential for rural revitalisation lies in the vast rural areas, and the introduction of the rural revitalisation strategy is conducive to solving the problems of unbalanced and inadequate development of agriculture, rural areas and farmers, thereby promoting the sustainable and healthy development of the countryside. The rapid development of China’s secondary and tertiary industries and the accelerating urbanisation process have brought more non-farm employment opportunities for smallholder farmers, and non-farm employment helps promote the outflow of smallholder farmers from their own land. The rational and orderly outflow of smallholder farmers’ land is conducive to the realisation of moderate scale agricultural operations, optimising the allocation of rural land resources, accelerating the pace of modernisation of agriculture and rural development, and realising the comprehensive revitalisation of the countryside. This paper uses a Probit model to analyse the influence of social capital on smallholder farmers’ willingness to leave their land, based on 511 smallholder farmers’ research data collected during a field study in Tiande Township,Shulan City,Jilin Province, and further investigates the changing pattern of social capital influencing smallholder farmers’ willingness to leave their land by constructing a mediating effect model. The study shows that the richer the social capital of smallholder farmers, the more they are able to promote their willingness to leave the land;the social capital of smallholder farmers is mediated by non-farm employment, which helps to promote land outflow. In order to analyse the reasons affecting the willingness of smallholder farmers to leave their land, the study proposes countermeasures such as increasing the transfer payments to the grassroots government, strengthening the social network of smallholder farmers, and providing reasonable and effective employment support measures for smallholder farmers. |
