Document No.1 of 2023 points out that the most arduous and arduous task of comprehensively building a modern socialist country still lies in rural areas.Currently, problems such as insufficient resources, irrational industrial structure, and low production efficiency in rural areas in China are prominent, which will affect the sustainable and healthy development of the rural economy.Rural tourism management involves all walks of life, with strong economic radiation and driving capacity.Promoting regional economic development from the market demand side is regarded as an important way to achieve rural revitalization. Therefore,Document No.1 has repeatedly proposed to strengthen the high-quality development of rural tourism. However,at present, there are few research results on agricultural tourism integration and rural industrial structure, and most of them are based on theoretical analysis, lacking scientific evidence, and the interaction between the two has not been effectively verified. In view of this, this study, based on existing research results, analyzes the mechanism of agricultural tourism integration promoting the optimization and upgrading of rural industrial structure from the perspectives of multiplier effect theory, new growth theory, industrial structure theory, and coupling coordination theory.A total of 17 variables are selected from the two subsystems of agriculture and tourism to form an agricultural tourism integration indicator system, and the coupling model is used to calculate the development level of agricultural tourism integration in each province,By constructing fixed effect regression and intermediary effect models,we empirically test the dynamic relationship and regional differences between agricultural tourism integration, consumer demand, and the upgrading and rationalization of rural industrial structure. The conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)The integration of agriculture and tourism has a significant positive effect on the optimization of rural industrial structure, but the effect varies from region to region. The promotion effect is most significant in the western region, while the promotion effect is not significant in the eastern and central regions;(2)Agricultural tourism integration can effectively promote the upgrading of rural industrial structure, with regional differences in its impact, with the eastern region being the most significant, followed by the western region, and the central region not significant;(3)Consumer demand plays a partial intermediary role in the process of agricultural tourism integration affecting the optimization of rural industrial structure. It has a complete intermediary effect on the upgrading of rural industrial structure.Based on the empirical results, this study proposes corresponding policy recommendations from four aspects: strengthening the integration of agricultural and tourism development, formulating differentiated development strategies, exerting the intermediary role of consumer demand, and improving the innovation of agricultural and tourism integration projects.
