With the development of information technology and the decrease of transportation cost, the production division and spatial separation of value chain have become the development direction of modern industrial organization. The trend of city function specialization based on value chain division of labor is becoming more and more obvious, and gradually becomes an important economic landscape of urban development system in the new era.The functional division of labor of cities is based on the interconnection of each other, but most previous studies are based on the attribute data of cities rather than the relationship data, and the spatial scope of the studies is mostly limited to city clusters, and the division of the functional types of value chain is too rough, limited to R&D and production, and there are few studies on the functional division of labor of cities from the national spatial level and from the "network" of interconnection between them. There are few in-depth discussions on the division of urban functions from the national spatial level and from the perspective of interconnected "networks".In view of this, this paper selects the top 500 manufacturing enterprises in China in 2020 as the research sample, based on the relationship data between the top 500 enterprises and the 13,328 enterprises they invest in,attributed to the cities where they are located, and constructs four major urban functional networks of research and development, manufacturing, production services, and wholesale and retail according to the value chain division of labor links to which their business types belong.Using social network and geospatial analysis methods, the spatial structure of the overall city network of China’s manufacturing industry and the city networks of different functional divisions of the value chain are portrayed. On this basis, this paper empirically analyzes the factors influencing the formation of the linkages of research and development, manufacturing, production services, and wholesale and retail urban functional networks using the QAP method. The specific findings of the study are as follows. The study shows that: firstly,Chinese manufacturing industry has formed a relatively complete domestic value chain, and the functional networks of each link of the value chain have taken shape.Second, among the four functional division of labor networks, the R&D network has a similar structure to the service network and is distributed in the core nodes along the coast, with the highest degree of enterprise concentration and greater influence on other cities in the network;the division of labor linkage mostly occurs between developed cities represented by Beijing and Shanghai and other cities;the manufacturing functional network is denser and more evenly distributed, with the regional central cities having greater influence on the surrounding cities and the core nodes The city’s status declines, and is the main functional type of the vast number of central and western cities at present;the city linkage of the retail network is related to the scope of the market radiated by the city, and the city with a wider market scope has a farther distance and higher intensity of external linkage.Third, the results of the empirical analysis show that inter-city differences in education resources, policy support levels, and research capacity have significant positive effects on the formation of R&D network linkages;differences in labor resources, salary levels, and urban energy supply capacity have significant positive effects on the formation of manufacturing network linkages;differences in financial resources and infrastructure levels of cities promote the formation of inter-city service linkages;and population size and The size of population and the level of urban marketization have a significant positive impact on the formation of retail network linkages. In terms of public influences,Internet information flow as a medium of circulation has a significant positive impact on the formation of functional network linkages, while transportation and logistics only have a significant positive impact on manufacturing and retail network linkages;cities with higher economic and political status are more likely to have functional linkages among cities because of their larger market size, while the spatial and geographical proximity, especially among cities within the eastern region, has a stronger impact on the formation of functional linkages.linkages are stronger. |
