Under the background of fierce market competition and the society is seeking high-quality development, innovation is getting more and more attention. It can keep enterprises unique and competitive, and is the source of long-term survival and development of enterprises. As an important part of corporate culture, the mission statement clarifies the value and significance of the company’s existence and determines the direction of the company’s long-term development in the future.Based on the theory of strategic management, mission statement is the foundation and prerequisite of corporate strategic management, corporate innovation is also an important part of corporate long-term development strategy. However,it is not clear that how the mission statement affects the innovation performance of a company, and it has become a question that needs to be explored, which is of great significance to the mission management and innovation management of the company.Based on the perspectives of stakeholders and corporate social responsibility, this paper establishes an intermediary mechanism of "expressing concern for stakeholders in mission statement—fulfilling corporate social responsibility—innovative performance".This article draws on the logical framework of "words-actions-reward",and clarifies that the "words" of the declaration established by the mission statement will guide the company’s action direction and promote the company’s "actions" in fulfilling its social responsibilities to various stakeholders, and then helps to obtain the support of stakeholders, integrate internal and external innovation resources, and obtain the "reward" of innovation performance returns. This article reviews related research on mission statement, corporate social responsibility, and innovation performance and analyzes the relationship between them, puts forward relevant hypotheses, and builds models. This article focuses on 1,297 companies from 2015 to 2019 that have been listed on the A-share market and have been established for more than 10 years, because these long-established companies often form a stable mission statement and cultural orientation. Finally, through regression analysis, this article draws the following conclusions:(1)The focus on stakeholders in the mission statement helps promote the improvement of corporate innovation performance, and corporate social responsibility plays an intermediary role between them.(2)For the specific stakeholder, the focus on customers, employees, and suppliers in the mission statement promotes the fulfillment of social responsibilities, thereby improving innovation performance, while the focus on shareholders and society in the mission statement has not been found to significantly promote the innovation performance of the enterprise. This research expands the research perspective of mission statement, fills in the lack of research on the relationship between mission statement and innovation performance, and opens the "black box" of the mechanism between the two from the perspective of corporate social responsibility, which is important for follow-up related research. Finally, based on the research conclusions, this article makes recommendations for the company’s mission statement management, social responsibility activities and innovation activity management, hoping to help improve the company’s operating performance.
