The major policies of the digital economy and the trend of digital transformation have given rise to a wide range of new technologies and exploration of new models across industries, which have greatly promoted the development process of China’s commercial banks in implementing the new model of open banking, and deeply transformed the interaction methods and service efficiency of commercial banks serving the real economy and small and medium-sized enterprises. The traditional commercial banks’ long-term competitive advantage based on the interest rate differential formed by institutional dividends is gradually weakening, and the business foundation of newly established private banks is weak and constrained by the geographical restrictions of offline branches. How to use financial technology capabilities to layout open banking platform construction, enhance the omni-channel management ability and channel experience, and further promote business growth has become one of the biggest hotspots in the banking industry. This article analyzes 40 commercial bank samples with publicly available data in the construction of open banking platforms. The banks cover large state-owned commercial banks,joint-stock banks, medium and large city commercial banks, and private banks.Using principal component analysis to confirm the weights of four indicators related to the open banking process, including the launch time of the open platform, the number of API interfaces, the coverage of business types, and the number of access scenarios,a numerical description of the open banking process is obtained.Shareholder background is described using two indicators, shareholder nature and the maximum shareholder holding ratio.Further empirical tests are conducted using theoretical hypotheses and Tobit regression models to study the impact of shareholder background on their open banking development process. The research results show that:1.There are significant differences in the open banking development process of commercial banks with different shareholder backgrounds, with the openness levels increasing in the order of national,state-owned legal persons, and domestic non-state-owned legal persons.2.Shareholder concentration will affect the development process of commercial banks’ open banking, and the higher the shareholder concentration, the less conducive it is to the bank’s openness process. The significance of this research is to use the research methods of corporate finance to find the factors that affect the development process of open banking from the background of commercial banks themselves, explore how commercial banks should leverage their strengths and avoid weaknesses, and propose corresponding suggestions for commercial banks with different backgrounds.
