China has been supporting Africans in many ways, covering domains like the economy, culture, and foreign relations.Tanzania has gradually developed its cooperation with China among African countries for years. For the decades,China has also helped to alleviate poverty in African countries through foreign aid.Given the gender poverty is one of the main challenges facing women in the world, and it is also one of the main theoretical paradigms used for feminist analysis on women and development, this research examines on whether and how China’s foreign aid affects the alleviation of gendered poverty using Tanzania as a case study.China’s foreign aid can be seen in many projects in Tanzania. However, this research will focus on four Chinese projects, which are(1)TAZARA(Tanzania – Zambia Railway,a Chinese-funded project in 1970 – 1975 and it is still very active and employs about56,000 workers);(2)Urafiki Textile(Urafiki is a Swahili word for friendship),which is commonly known as China – Tanzania Friendship Textile Company Ltd founded in the year 1968;(3)The Chinese water supply Project in Chalinze, established in 2007.The Chinese Government provided a grant of 5.6 billion Tanzanian Shillings which aimed at rehabilitating and extending water supply;and(4)the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, which was structured by Beijing Construction Engineering Company Limited with the cost of 56.4 billion Tanzania Shillings, among which Tanzania contributed 25 billion Tanzania shillings and China contributed the rest. The research draws data collected from both empirical and documentary analysis from diverse sources, including the official statistics and reports concerning the projects, secondhand academic literature, local and international news reports, research studies, and observational survey.Through the analysis of these materials,we can conclude that China’s foreign aid is not only development aid for economic growth, but also humanitarian aid.China’s foreign aid to Tanzania has played a positive role in Tanzanian women’s fight against gendered poverty. In particular,it has empowered Tanzanian women economically and spiritually, and enhanced their awareness and ability to recognize and get rid of poverty. |
