At present, the academic community advocates knowledge exchange and integration between disciplines, but whether there is a causal relationship between the degree of interdisciplinary discipline and the degree of paper subversion has not yet been determined. In past studies, scholars have typically used correlation measures from traditional statistical methods to measure the relationship between them, but this method has not taken into account other factors that may have influenced the results. Therefore, there are large differences in the conclusions of this research question.Even scientific indicators derived from correlation analysis can be ambiguous. In addition, multiple controversial findings on the same research question may not provide accurate recommendations. To address some of these issues, this study chose a generalised propensity score matching approach,by controlling for other confounding factors that could have an impact on the study indicators and avoiding these factors from causing a large degree of bias to the final results. The study set the treatment variable Div* as a comprehensive indicator of disciplinary crossover and the outcome variable as a D indicator of the degree of subversion of a paper, and also considered control variables such as author team size, reference status, funding status, and collaborating institution status to investigate the causal relationship between the degree of subversion of a paper and the degree of disciplinary crossover in physics. This approach not only allows for a comprehensive consideration of the effects of other factors, but also allows for the control of these confounding factors, resulting in more accurate and reliable research findings.Secondly, based on email consultation interviews with 100 interdisciplinary experts and relevant case studies of the three Nobel Prize winners in physics in 2021,this study qualitatively explores the causal relationship between the degree of interdisciplinary discipline and the degree of paper disruption.By combining the results of expert interviews and case studies, this study can not only examine this area in more detail and depth, but also correspond and complement the conclusions of quantitative research. This research model has a certain reference effect for the study of causality, and has important theoretical significance for the research and exploration of interdisciplinary fields. When measuring the relationship between the degree of interdisciplinarity and the degree of dissertation disruption in detail,it is found that the impact of interdisciplinary degree on the degree of dissertation disruption is different from the previously expected hypothesis:When only the correlation between the two was measured,it was found that the correlation coefficient between the degree of interdisciplinary discipline and the degree of paper subversion was 0.552,reaching a significant level of 0.01,indicating that there was a certain correlation between the two.Interdisciplinary cooperation brings new ideas and methods to solve complex problems, thereby promoting the development of scientific research. However, for the production of outstanding results at interdisciplinary disciplines, interdisciplinary cooperation alone is not enough, but also requires the support of the external environment, especially a complete disciplinary evaluation system. Therefore, the contribution of interdisciplinary cooperation needs to be more comprehensive and in-depth research. However, when controlling for variables to measure the causal relationship between the two,the study found that the causal relationship between the degree of disciplinary crossover and the degree of thesis disruption was not significant, and even showed an inverse effect.Although disciplinary cross-collaboration can bring fresh ideas and suitable methods to solve complex problems,it is difficult to achieve radical breakthrough innovations due to the lack of in-depth domain expertise. Therefore,in the current state of affairs where cross-disciplinary collaboration is being strongly promoted,it should be realised that cross-discipline is not beneficial for all research and teams. The study reveals the mechanisms of disciplinary crossover and provides guidance for the development of effective interdisciplinary policies and evaluation systems.Combined with the results of email interviews with experts, the study found that most experts agree that there is a positive relationship between interdisciplinarity and degree of disruption, and that interdisciplinarity can have a positive impact on major breakthroughs in the subject area. However, the views of experts on whether there is a causal relationship between the two are disputed.Through case analysis,we find that interdisciplinarity has a positive role in solving complex problems, especially in solving specific problems, interdisciplinary can provide more ideas. However, more in-depth research is needed as to whether there is a causal relationship.
