Equations and inequalities are important contents of "number and algebra" in compulsory education stage.Studying equations and inequalities is beneficial to improve students’ m odel thought, symbol consciousness and application consciousness. The monitoring results of ethnic education quality in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 2020 show that the seventh grade students in southern Xinjiang are not ideal in solving unary linear equations, solving unary linear inequalities, solving practical problems with binary linear equations and solving practical problems with column inequalities. This paper studies the problem-solving ability of seventh grade students in southern Xinjiang, explores the factors affecting their problem-solving ability, and puts forward some suggestions to improve their problem-solving ability,so as to provide some basis for the teaching of equation and inequality in seventh grade students in southern Xinjiang. This paper adopts three methods:literature research, quantitative analysis and case analysis, and takes the topics of four equations and inequalities in the examination paper of ethnic education quality monitoring in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 2020 as research tools, and takes 736 students from five regions in southern Xinjiang as samples for analysis.Based on SOLO classification theory,Combining the knowledge of equations and inequalities with the actual characteristics of students, the level framework of solving problems of equations and inequalities is established, and the concrete performances of four questions in different levels are determined:solving one-dimensional linear equations, solving one-dimensional linear inequalities, solving practical problems by listing two-dimensional linear equations and solving practical problems by listing inequalities. After statistics and analysis, the following conclusions are obtained:(1)The seventh grade students in southern Xinjiang have low ability to solve problems of equations and inequalities;(2)In solving equations and inequalities,it is more difficult for students to understand the related algorithms and operating laws, and only about 30%of students reach level 3 and can accurately apply the algorithms and operating laws;(3)In solving practical problems with equations or inequalities,it is more difficult for students to understand the information in the problem stem.Up to 60%of the students are at level 0,and they have no idea of solving problems,so they can’t extract the quantitative relationship from the problem stem.Only about 10%of the students can reach level 2,and can list the correct formula according to the information of the problem stem.At the same time, this paper tests the differences in solving problems of equations and inequalities between urban and rural students and students with different accommodation methods, and finds that there are significant differences in solving problems of equations and inequalities between urban and rural students and students with different accommodation methods, and urban students are better than rural students, while nonboarding students are better than boarding students.According to the analysis of the proportion of different levels of problem-solving ability and the specific performance of each level, the reasons for the low ability of solving equations and inequalities of seventh grade students in southern Xinjiang are attributed to the following six points:(1)Teachers do not emphasize the details of operations properly;(2)Students have dyslexia and poor understanding ability of mathematical text problems;(3)Teachers neglect the teaching of basic knowledge, and students can’t understand the concept clearly;(4)Teachers neglect the cultivation of problem-solving habits and students are careless;(5)Unbalanced development between urban and rural areas in southern Xinjiang;(6)The management mechanism of boarding schools is inappropriate and educational resources are lacking. Finally, based on the study of the factors affecting the ability to solve problems of equations and inequalities, this paper puts forward some relevant suggestions:(1)Emphasize the operational details in solving problems and cultivate the application ability of computational algorithms;(2)Strengthen the study of national common language and cultivate reading comprehension ability;(3)Consolidate basic knowledge and strengthen the study of conceptual knowledge;(4)Cultivate students’ habit of solving problems and standardize writing;(5)Balance urban and rural educational resources and promote urban-rural integration;(6)Increase investment in educational resources of boarding schools.
