We are living in an age of information, digitization, and globalization. The degree of digitalization of society is gradually increasing. There are things related to data everywhere in our life, and every data contains information behind it.Therefore, making statistical inferences from data analysis and knowledge about probability then making rational decisions, has become one of the skills necessary for students to further develop and make rational decisions. As one of the ten core concepts, the concept of data analysis has assumed an increasingly important place in the teaching of mathematics at the compulsory level. At present, researchers have mostly focused on research studies on the current situation of data analysis concepts, and few scholars have paid attention to the differences in the development of data analysis concepts in different regions(e.g.,urban and rural areas). The article uses questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations to develop a data analysis conceptions test for junior high school students based on the evaluation framework and evaluation index system of "data analysis conceptions" in compulsory education constructed by Tong Li and Zhang Hao,and 599 eighth grade students from two junior high schools in Shaoxing,Zhejiang. The test was administered to 599 Grade 8 students from two junior high schools in Shaoxing, and the differences in students’ perceptions of data analysis between urban and rural schools and between genders were analyzed and compared. The following conclusions were drawn: The overall level of data analysis perceptions of Grade 8 students was low. There are differences between urban and rural areas in the concept of data analysis among eighth graders, with students in urban schools having a higher level of development of "conceptions of data analysis" than those in rural schools. There are no gender differences in the perceptions of data analysis among Grade 8students.In order to analyze in depth, the reasons that influence the development of junior high school students’ conceptions of data analysis, the author conducted interviews with teachers and students, and classroom observations, and found that teachers’ own understanding of the concept of data analysis is not deep enough, their awareness of allowing students to experience the whole process of data analysis is weak, and their classroom teaching methods are homogeneous.Students liked the knowledge of statistics and probability as well as thought that this piece of knowledge was less difficult to test and close to life, but the knowledge of statistics and probability to solve the reality of life consciousness is weak.Based on the findings of the above survey, three teaching suggestions are made for the preparation of teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. In terms of teacher teaching, focus on students’ experience of the whole process of data analysis,on developing students’ critical thinking, and on the integration of information technology with classroom content. In terms of student learning, maintain interest while cultivating good learning attitudes, pay attention to the use of data analysis methods to solve real-life situations, and pay attention to the cultivation of the habit of reflecting on data analysis concepts.
