With the development of media technology, the digital existence of human beings is bringing a new social landscape and has reshaped the way of information transmission and communication.During the process, the influence of media technology on individual body image has increasingly caught the attention of academic researchers and become a hot topic.Among them,as an important communication practice of young women in social media,it is still controversial whether selfie editing can improve or reduce body satisfaction, and its relationship with body image needs further exploration and discussion. This study adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative research to conduct in-depth observation and exploration of participants in the beautification behavior of selfies, which is mainly divided into two parts.A questionnaire survey was conducted on 518 female college students’ self-portrait beautification behaviors to explore the relationship and characteristics between self-portrait beautification behaviors and body image,as well as the mediating role of self-objectification and the moderating role of same-sex competition. In Study 2,the in-depth interview method was adopted to conduct semi-structured interviews with 13 college students from the first year to the second year of graduate school. The gender culture and technical bias behind media practice were further explored from women’s daily media usage habits, and how gender power penetrated media and controlled or disciplined women’s bodies. After summarizing the whole study, the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)The revised selfie beautification behavior Scale for female college students includes three dimensions: beautification frequency, photo investment and photo processing. The reliability and validity are both good, which can be used as a valid instrument to measure the selfie beautification behavior of female college students.(2)There were significant positive correlations between self-objectification,negative body image and same-sex competition among female college students(3)Self-objectification plays a partial mediating role between female college students’ self-portrait beautification behavior and negative body image.(4)The mediating effect of self objectification is regulated by the same sex competition factors. For female college students with low level of same-sex competition,self-objectification has no significant effect on the prediction of negative body image. For women with high homoerotic competition tendency,self-objectification positively predicted negative body image, and with the increase of individual homoerotic competition level, the predictive effect was gradually enhanced.
