With the increase of the elderly population in China and the intensification of population aging, the issue of the elderly has been widely concerned by the society. In the choice of senior care, many elderly people choose institutional care, and the problems related to the elderly in the institutions have been exposed, among which the emotional support problem is particularly prominent. On the one hand,in order to enable the elderly in institutions to interact better with the social environment, thus enhancing emotional support, alleviating loneliness and improving the quality of life;on the other hand,in order to test the applicability of group work in intervening in the emotional support of the elderly in elderly institutions. This study selected Hubei Province A elderly institution as a case study, used semi-structured interview method and participant observation method to collect relevant data, took the elderly emotional support problem as an entry point, and under the guidance of social support theory and activity theory, researched the path and strategy of group work to intervene in the elderly emotional support problem in elderly institutions.By measuring the sources of social support, the degree of social support, and loneliness of the elderly in A elderly institutions,we found that they had a large emotional support problem. The manifestations were mainly reflected in three aspects:relatively weaker emotional support from family, relatively less support from peer groups, and weaker emotional support from elderly institutions. These problems were mainly caused by the spatially closed nature of the institutions, the low level of interpersonal interaction participation of the elderly, and the shift in the focus of care in A institutions. The author found through interviews with older adults in A elderly institutions that they generally have needs for interpersonal interaction, access to emotional support, and recreation. In order to respond to the needs of institutionalized older adults, social workers followed the "client-centered" service concept, focused on the problems and needs of institutionalized older adults, developed a scientific and personalized intervention plan, and carried out practical interventions on the emotional support of institutionalized older adults from three perspectives: family members, peer groups, and institutional staff. Finally, the author summarizes and reflects on the entire practice process and analyzes the experience, and proposes countermeasures to improve emotional support for institutionalized older adults at different levels, hoping to provide references and lessons for later studies. The study found that group work interventions are not only necessary but also effective in helping institutionalized older adults enhance their emotional support and build multiple support networks, thereby improving the quality of life in old age.
