In recent years, there have been a number of vicious bullying incidents in middle schools, which have aroused widespread concern from all walks of life.Bullying is a group interaction process, not just a binary conflict between the bully and the victim.Previous studies have found that 85% of bullying occurs in the presence of bystanders, and that bullying can often be stopped if bystanders actively intervene. The behavior of bystanders in bullying incidents will not only affect the development process and frequency of bullying, but also affect the psychological adaptation of the bullied. So it is necessary to pay more attention to bystanders of school bullying.Previous studies have shown that conscience is an important factor affecting bystander intervention behavior, but there is still a lack of in-depth research on how conscience affects bystander intervention behavior. For this reason, this study based on theory of bystander intervention, and discusses conscience impact on bullying bystander intervention for middle school students, and to explore the mediation effect of empathy and social self-efficacy adjustment,to reveal its mechanism of action,to provide reference for effective bullying bystander intervention plan, thus reducing the occurrence of secondary school bullying. In this study, the Adolescent Conscience Questionnaire,Bystander Intervention inBullying Measure,Adolescent Measure of Empathy and Sympathy,Social Self-Effica cy Questionnaire were used to conduct a questionnaire survey on 3290 middle school students from six schools in Hunan Province. The results showed that:(1)Conscience of middle school students has a significant positive predictive effect on bystander intervention of bullying.(2)Empathy partially mediated the relationship between conscience and bystander intervention;(3)The mediating effect of social self-efficacy on empathy moderates the latter half of the mediation process. Therefore, this study draws the following conclusions:(1)Conscience is closely related to bystander intervention, which not only directly affects bystander intervention behavior of middle school students, but also indirectly affects bystander intervention behavior through empathy.(2)Social self-efficacy moderated the effect of empathy on bystander intervention, and empathy positively predicted bystander intervention with the increase of social self-efficacy.The results from the five step of "bystander intervention model" is not only beneficial to a better understanding of middle school students’ level of conscience and the relationship between bystander intervention behavior, also helps to guide the school from cultivating middle school students of conscience, empathy and social self-efficacy of to promote positive bystander intervention behavior, which is of great significance for prevention and control of bullying.
