Research background: The academia attaches importance to the research of leisure lifestyles. It reflects a people-oriented society’.Currently, the research on the leisure lifestyles is lacked in university students and mixed-methods approach.Studying leisure lifestyles of university students during the COVID-19 epidemic will help schools and society to ensure the quality of leisure life of university students. And it is healthy for students’ physical and mental growth.Research objective: This paper adopted the literature method, questionnaire survey method,semi-structured interview method, mathematical and statistical method and narrative research method. It based on the push and pull theory, leisure hierarchy theory and leisure constraint negotiation strategy theory to compare the differences in leisure lifestyles of college students in Zhuhai before and under the epidemic.Understood the basic situation of leisure activity selection and leisure constraint among college students in Zhuhai under the epidemic. And analyzed the relationship between leisure and physical activity choices and leisure constraints in leisure lifestyles.Explored the negotiation ability of leisure constraints among university students in Zhuhai under the epidemic.Finding: compared with the pre-epidemic period, the reduced leisure conditions affected the types of leisure activity choices of university students in Zhuhai under the epidemic and increased the length of online leisure to a greater extent;leisure motivations changed to self-fulfilment,self-control,enjoyment of solitude and seeking relaxation;leisure constraints influenced leisure sport activity choices hierarchically;leisure sport activity choices were weakly related to leisure constraints;students could overcome leisure constraints through negotiate, but their ability to negotiate leisure constraints was weak.Research conclusions:1.Under the epidemic, university students in Zhuhai have less leisure time;their leisure motivation has changed to ability-controlled and stimulus-avoiding;their choice of leisure objects and leisure venues is limited;and their leisure consumption level is reduced. All reflecting the lack of leisure conditions, leading students to increase their online leisure time to a greater extent and their leisure lifestyle is affected.2.Under the epidemic, university students in Zhuhai are eager to continue their pre-epidemic leisure habits and show a diversity of leisure preferences. However, due to the lack of leisure conditions under the epidemic and the low level of students’ own leisure concepts, students tend to choose activities at a lower leisure level, significantly reducing the variety of leisure and physical activity choices.3.Under the epidemic, the personal intrinsic constraints, interpersonal constraints and structural constraints of university students in Zhuhai all become progressively more apparent with the prolonged presence of the primary structural constraint of authority constraints, and students’ leisure sport choices are thus affected hierarchically.4.Under the epidemic, leisure constraints do not lead to non-participation in leisure sports among university students in Zhuhai, and students will develop leisure constraint negotiation strategies due to strong leisure motivation, thus increasing leisure sports participation rates.5.Under the epidemic, university students in Zhuhai City actively adopt cognitive and behavioural strategies to negotiate leisure constraints, but the deficiencies in leisure sport cognition and the development of leisure sport activities on campus make students’ ability to negotiate leisure constraints limited.
