The development of the internet and the rise of new media are changing people’s concept of life,enriching learning methods and making communication between people more convenient.In the era of new media,a special group of people-university students-are also undergoing significant changes.Students are mentally active and therefore more open to new things.Therefore,new media are widely used and preferred among university students.Taking advantage of its advantages,the new media spread ideological and political education in an all-round and all-time manner,and the transformation of university students from thought to action provides favourable conditions for the development of ideological and political education and plays a role in promoting the development of education.However,the new media is a double-edged sword,bringing opportunities and challenges to the ideological and political education activities of university students.Due to the impact of new media on the ideological and political education of university students,it is necessary not only to develop ambitious university students,but also to develop university students with excellent overall qualities and the ability to serve society.To this end,it is very important to utilise the online media to educate university students in ideology and politics,overcome the disadvantages and improve the effectiveness of ideological and political education.First,this paper explains the concept,characteristics and functions of new media and the ideological and political education of university students,and further explores the significance of new media in the ideological and political education of university students.Next,it organises the opportunities and challenges posed to ideological and political education from the perspective of new media,and on this basis presents innovative demands for the ideological and political education of university students.Finally,based on the above analysis and from the actual needs of ideological and political education,it proposes innovative development of each of the four levels-educators,educational content,educational methods and educational environment-in order to realise the objectives of ideological and political education for university students.
