| Funded educational research is a unique social phenomenon in the United States that plays an important role in scientific research,knowledge production,and public policy formulation.Among numerous foundations,The Spencer Foundation is the only one in the United States that has been dedicated to granting educational research since its establishment,improving the quality of education,and building a fair education system.The early form of the foundation was established in 1962,and it was officially established as a foundation in 1968.It began officially granting educational research projects in 1971.During its development process,it was characterized by its broad focus on educational research topics,continuously expanding the scope and group of granting.Until now,it still plays an important role in promoting the development of education research in the United States and even worldwide.This study takes The Spencer Foundation as a case study to explore in depth the unique granting mechanism of foundations in the United States.The Spencer Foundation responds to social needs,promotes the development of educational knowledge,and trains academic leaders and a new generation of scholars in education by granting educational research.This study expands the field of educational history research by exploring the relationship between The Spencer Foundation and educational research,enriching the research content of foreign educational history in China.It is divided into four chapters and the conclusion section.Firstly,this study starts with an introduction to the establishment of The Spencer Foundation through the excavation of historical materials,analyzing the social and educational background of the foundation’s establishment,as well as the background of government and other organizations and foundations’ granting for educational research;Introduce the founder Lyer M.Spencer himself;And an introduction to the Chicago community as an academic research platform for The Spencer Foundation.Secondly,it introduces the unique operational management system formed by The Spencer Foundation under the background of academic system specialization platform,including personnel management,fund management,and project management.Then there is an analysis of the projects granted by The Spencer Foundation,introducing Major Grants,Small Grants,and Fellowships.Summarize and analyze the granting themes,explore the relationship between the changes in the focus of the supported research topics and social development,as well as the characteristics of the recipients of three different projects.Subsequently,it introduces the leading figures in the development of The Spencer Foundation,including renowned scholars Lawrence Arthur Cremin,Patricia Albjerg Graham,and Ellen Condliffe Lagemann,who played a unique leading role in the foundation’s development during their tenure.They have used their limited personal strength to develop the foundation’s granting plan and various related work to cultivate reserve talents for educational research,promoting the development of the foundation.Research has shown that The Spencer Foundation has played an important driving role in the development of American society,reflected in three aspects: Firstly,it provides granting to the field of educational research,promoting the development of educational research by responding to the needs of social development for education;Secondly,to become a leading figure in the field of educational research and promote future learning,cultivating the next generation of researchers;Thirdly,specialized granting has enhanced the emergence of new knowledge in educational research.At the same time,it provides reference for the development of educational research in China,which is reflected in the operation of the scientific research system and the granting of educational research projects. |
