In the era of rapid development of the internet, the network has become the primary battlefield for public opinion dissemination and diffusion. In the context of network social media platforms, the behavior of public opinion audiences in the face of major emergencies has important implications for public opinion dissemination and social stability.Public opinion audiences on social media platforms possess the characteristics of convenience,real-time interaction, and information dissemination, which make the spread of network public opinion more rapid and extensive. However,in the face of major emergencies, the behavior of public opinion audiences is often unstable and unpredictable. Therefore, exploring the formation mechanism of public opinion audiences’ participation behavior in online public opinion has important theoretical significance for the study of user information behavior theory, and it also has important practical significance for the application of fitting and targeted guidance of public opinion audiences’ information behavior. This paper studies the characteristics of audience participation behavior and the behavior path in major unexpected incidents of online public opinion. In the study,we used the stimulus-organism-response theory as the theoretical framework and employed qualitative interviews and grounded theory methods to obtain 17 main categories, which were further encoded into eight main factors. We divided these factors into the perception stage,self-processing stage, and public opinion participation stage to better understand audience participation behavior in online public opinion. In the perception stage, the three main categories of event attributes, social and political factors, and public opinion dissemination situation had an impact. In the self-processing stage, this stage was influenced by individual attributes, individual emotional factors, individual cognitive factors, individual values, and social network factors. Finally,in the public opinion participation stage, this stage was influenced by the first two stages.Through the analysis of these factors,we can better understand the characteristics and path of audience participation behavior in online public opinion. In addition, this paper also used a complete information game model and MATLAB simulation to conduct in-depth research on the construction of behavior path in online public opinion. The simulation data analysis results showed that the speed of the dissemination of online public opinion information on major unexpected incidents depends on the probability of audience participation and forwarding, and these two factors are interconnected. The speed of the spread of false information is not related to the initial number of major unexpected incidents, but the deception and attention of the public opinion audience to the information,as well as the "herd effect," will have a significant impact on participation behavior. In the dissemination process, the less time the public opinion audience spends thinking, the fewer opportunities there are for information interaction and knowledge collision, the higher the probability of choosing to participate, and the faster the spread and the wider the scope. On the other hand, the speed of the spread of online public opinion information also depends on the willingness of the public opinion audience to forward. The time cost of audience participation is negatively correlated with the degree of spread. In conclusion, the research results of this paper are of great significance for a deeper understanding of the characteristics of audience participation behavior and behavior path in major unexpected incidents of online public opinion. These research results can provide important decision-making support and guidance for governments and social organizations in responding to major unexpected incidents, and also provide useful research ideas and methods for related disciplines.
