| Context,as one of the key concepts studied in the field of linguistics, and the contextual pedagogy extended from it,also occupies an important place in language teaching. The reasonable use of contextual pedagogy helps students to grasp the main idea of a novel as a whole, thus helping teachers to improve the classroom level of novel teaching. At present, there is little research on the contextual approach to novel teaching in primary school. This paper places novel teaching in the contextual theory and proposes corresponding novel teaching strategies in order to provide reference for novel teaching in primary schools.Through questionnaire surveys and classroom observations, this study finds that there are three problems with the application of the contextual teaching method in the teaching of novels in Key Stage 3: the superficiality of the analysis of teaching objectives before class, the singularity of the activity mode during class and the one-sidedness of the evaluation of teaching after class. The reason for this is that teachers do not know enough about contextual teaching,do not pay enough attention to it,and do not have a single and innovative approach. To address these problems, the author proposes strategies for the application of contextual teaching methods in the teaching of novels in Key Stage 3: before the lesson, context should be used to relate the clues of the text;during the lesson, context should be used to implement teaching practices;after the lesson, the effect can be evaluated with the help of context.Secondly,in order to verify the rationality and effectiveness of the strategies, the author uses the case study method and incorporates the above application strategies into the teaching plan and implementation process through classroom teaching practice during the internship, and observes the teaching videos, reflects on the problems that exist in them, adjusts the teaching plan and carries out the teaching practice again. The study concludes that there are strengths and weaknesses in the application of the contextual approach to the teaching of primary school novels in Key Stage 3.In the end,the advantages of the contextual approach to teaching fiction in Key Stage 3were found to include-going deeper into the text and breaking the conventions of teaching fiction;keeping in touch with the context and feeling the "separation of form" and "integration of meaning" in the text "It is also a good way to create a classroom context to promote students’ understanding, and to activate students’ cognitive background by combining the social and cultural contexts inside and outside the text.In addition, the difficulties in applying the contextual approach to the teaching of fiction in Key Stage 3 lie in the difficulty of changing teachers’ conceptions of teaching and in their lack of relevant knowledge and competence. Finally, the following suggestions are made: strengthen teachers’ contextual knowledge and improve their teaching ability;encourage students to participate in context creation and emphasise the teaching subject. |
