| The importance of data analysis literacy as one of the six core literacies in the GCSE Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition)cannot be overstated.Collecting data as the first step in data analysis is also a crucial step,so developing students’ data analysis literacy starts with developing their data collection skills.Understanding students’ data collection skills can provide some suggestions and guidance for teaching statistics in secondary schools. It is therefore necessary to examine the current level status and the factors affecting students’ data collection skills and to make specific recommendations for their development. In this paper, the data collection ability of high school students is investigated through the literature review method, test paper method and questionnaire method.Firstly,by reading a large amount of literature, the concept of data collection ability, assessment framework, investigation studies and cultivation strategies were sorted out and the assessment framework of this paper was determined. The test paper was prepared according to the level dimension and content dimension, and the questionnaire was prepared from four factors: students, teachers, teaching materials and environment. After proving the validity of the test paper and questionnaire through pretesting, students from eight classes in two grades of senior two and senior three in a secondary school were selected as the research subjects to investigate the overall situation, differences and influencing factors of data collection ability, and the following conclusions were drawn:(1)the overall level of data collection ability of high school students is not high and lies in level two;(2)the score rate of each knowledge dimension has a wide gap,and students’ mastery of basic knowledge is not(3)There is no significant difference in the data collection ability of high school students in terms of gender, but there are significant differences in terms of class and subject categories, with the level of experimental classes being higher than that of ordinary classes, the data collection ability of students in science classes being higher than that of students in arts classes, and the data collection ability of students in physics classes being higher than that of students in history subjects;(4)There is no correlation between students’ data collection ability and their performance in mathematics and whether they attend tutorials, and there is a significant positive correlation with whether they have statistical There was a significant positive correlation between students’ data collection ability and their performance in mathematics and whether they attended tutorials, and whether they had practical experience in statistics.By analysing the questionnaires to understand the factors affecting the data collection ability of high school students, the following conclusions were drawn:(1)Among the student factors, the highest to lowest correlations with the data collection ability of high school students were:information technology use, knowledge of data analysis, learning attitude, and non-intellectual factors.(2)Among the teacher factors, the gender of the teacher is related to the data collection ability, but there is no significant correlation between the teaching style of the teacher,teacher-student relationship, the idea of immediate penetration, and the use of information technology and the data collection ability of high school students;(3)There is no significant correlation between the textbook factor and the data collection ability of high school students;(4)The learning environment is significantly correlated with the data collection ability of high school students. There was no significant correlation between the learning environment and the data collection ability of high school students, and there was no significant correlation between the participation in after-school tutoring, mother’s education and father’s education and the data collection ability of high school students. To address the current situation of high school students’ data collection ability, corresponding cultivation strategies were proposed:(1)strengthen the information technology skills of teachers and students, master modern information technology and apply them to daily teaching;(2)focus on the cultivation of students’ statistical concepts and positive attitudes, students’ motivation can promote the development of data collection ability;(3)improve the education method which aims at exam-oriented education, improve teachers’ teaching thinking and enhance teachers’ attention to the statistics component and create a platform for social statistics practice to accumulate practical experience;(4)build a good,learning-friendly classroom learning environment, strengthen communication between parents and schools, provide timely feedback on students’ learning and living status, and promote students’ healthy growth. This study analyzes the current situation of high school students’ data collection ability by constructing an assessment framework, analyzes the factors influencing its development from different dimensions, and proposes corresponding cultivation strategies, which to a certain extent provides reference values for teaching statistics in high school mathematics. |
