Abstract/Summary:
Curriculum standards are the basic programmatic documents of the national curriculum and are of great importance in guiding teachers in their teaching work. The newly published Language Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)(hereinafter referred to as the New Curriculum Standards)is a collection of scientific research wisdom from experts and scholars in the field of education in China, and offers new ’teaching suggestions’ to teachers. The New Curriculum Standards are based on core literacies and point out that teachers should design their teaching objectives with literacy as the guide. As the most basic and important component of core literacy, improving primary school students’ language reading literacy has become one of the key objectives of teaching.Traditional education concepts and teaching methods have led to many drawbacks in language reading teaching, which to a certain extent hinder the development of primary school students’ core language literacy. The concept of project-based learning is highly compatible with the new curriculum, which emphasises the structuring of curriculum content. The successful examples of project-based learning applied to subject teaching abroad provide new ideas on how to improve primary school students’ language reading literacy. This study aims to improve primary school students’ language reading literacy and takes project-based learning as an opportunity to do so.A single-group pre-and post-test experimental design was chosen to conduct a teaching experiment with Primary 5 students of Primary L as the experimental subjects. The study is broadly divided into four stages: the first stage, literature and current situation analysis.Through the literature research method,a detailed study of relevant literature at home and abroad was conducted, focusing on the core concepts and specific activity processes of project-based learning;through the survey research method, the current situation of primary school students’ language reading literacy and the current situation of language reading teaching focused on research questions;in the second stage, the teaching programme was designed. The third stage is to carry out teaching experiments. The teaching cases were applied to primary school reading classrooms to investigate whether project-based learning could improve primary school students’ language reading literacy;Stage 4,data analysis. The SPSS software was used to test and analyse the data obtained from the experiment in order to test the experimental hypothesis. In this study, the PIRLS assessment criteria for primary school students’ reading literacy were used as the main reference for the experimental results, and primary school students’ reading behaviour and attitudes, reading comprehension ability and performance on two types of text tests were analysed. The results of the analysis show that project-based learning can improve primary school students’ reading behaviour and attitudes;project-based learning can improve primary school students’ performance on the literary text test;project-based learning can improve primary school students’ performance on the informational text test;project-based learning can improve primary school students’ reading comprehension skills. The experiment concluded that project-based learning has a positive impact on primary school students’ reading literacy.
