Shenbao Correspondence School was a special form of journalism education in the Republic of China.From 1933 to 1936,in order to cultivate news talents needed by the newspaper industry,the school hired domestic scholars to compile textbooks and carried out correspondence teaching by way of "no classes,regular mailing of textbooks and letter evaluation of homework".As the main teaching resources,these17 journalism teaching materials were published to the public after completing the mission of correspondence teaching,further playing the role of popularizing journalism knowledge.This set of textbooks was the first series of journalism teaching materials systematically published by modern Chinese journalism education institutions,and also the representative results in the exploration of the localization of modern Chinese journalism education.Taking the journalism teaching materials of the university as the research object,this paper systematically analyzed the historical background,system setting,content characteristics and historical significance of this set of teaching materials by means of literature analysis,case study and comparative study.It focused on the suitability and localization characteristics of its application in specific times,specific educational forms and educational objects.It was found that the teaching materials of the school were mainly practical,second to historical theory,supplemented by a small number of general education teaching materials.The overall system was relatively complete,and reflected a certain degree of pioneering.The authors of the textbooks were all experts or scholars with rich working and teaching experience,and some of them had overseas study background and high professional quality.From the point of view of the content of the textbooks,the textbooks matched with the teaching objectives,the form of correspondence teaching,and the students’ cognitive basis,which had high adaptability.Its content covered recent works cases and domestic and foreign newspaper trends,was high up-to-date;In the course of explaining the definition and concept of journalism and exploring the development experience of China’s newspaper industry,the textbook critically drew lessons from foreign journalism,and independently explored the solutions to special problems in China,such as paper problem,Chinese characters and national conditions,reflecting the consciousness of localization and innovation.As teaching materials in the early stage of journalism education in China,the academic value of applying journalism correspondence school teaching materials was limited,but it played a positive role in promoting journalism education and popularizing news knowledge based on relevant historical materials and graduates’ destinations.The construction and application of the teaching materials,such as attaching importance to the qualification level of the authors,closely linking with the development of the industry,strengthening the awareness of localization and innovation of teaching materials,would all provide useful reference for the construction of the current Chinese journalism teaching materials.
