Adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and adulthood. It is a unique stage of human development and adolescents experience rapid physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth. As adolescents at this time of mental development are still immature, they are prone to anxiety, depression, and other negative emotions.Emotional intelligence is not only the ability to monitor the emotions,it also helps individuals identify and use this information to guide their thoughts and actions. It can help individuals to effectively realize the changes of emotions, regulate them in a timely manner, and reduce the impact of negative emotions on their physical and mental health.A number of scholars have conducted studies on emotional intelligence and anxiety and depression in adolescents, but there are still discrepancies in the results of these studies,so this study will conduct a meta-analysis of previous studies to produce more general and accurate results.Through network analysis, this study will further explore the relationship between emotional intelligence and anxiety and depression of adolescents, explore the internal structure of emotional intelligence scale and the network structure of emotional intelligence, anxiety and depression. It also provides theoretical basis for specific intervention directions to improve emotional intelligence and anxiety and depression of adolescents. This study uses meta-analysis and network analysis to explore the relationship between emotional intelligence and adolescent anxiety and depression. In the meta-analysis,through literature retrieval and screening,a total of 36 literatures and37 independent research samples met the requirements of meta-analysis,including a total of 31,521 subjects.According to the heterogeneity test results, the random effects model was used to conduct a meta-analysis,and the relationship between emotional intelligence and adolescent anxiety was found(r=-0.26,p<0.01),depression(r=-0.30,p<0.01)showed a significant negative correlation. The moderating effect test showed that the choice of anxiety measuring tool affected the relationship between emotional intelligence and anxiety, and the relationship between emotional intelligence and depression was affected by the choice of emotional intelligence measuring tool and publication year.It is found that emotional intelligence is negatively correlated with adolescent anxiety and depression through questionnaire.Meanwhile, two kinds of networks are constructed according to the questionnaire results to further explore the internal structure of emotional intelligence and the specific ways of its influence on adolescent anxiety and depression:(1)The emotional intelligence network.By constructing the emotional intelligence network, items E12(I know how to prolong a good mood),E25(I can understand the non-verbal information passed to me by others)and E31(I keep myself in a good mood to cope with challenges in the face of setbacks)are found to be the central components of the network.By intervening these three components, teenagers’ emotional intelligence can be improved more effectively.(2)Construct networks for emotional intelligence, anxiety and depression respectively, and find that self-emotion management is the bridging component of the two networks. Therefore, improving adolescents’ self-emotion management ability can reduce their anxiety and depression. In summary, adolescent emotional intelligence is significantly negatively correlated with anxiety and depression, and the relationship between adolescent emotional intelligence and anxiety and depression is affected by moderating variables. There are important nodes affecting the relationship between emotional intelligence network as well as the emotional intelligence-anxiety network and emotional intelligence-depression network.
