According to China’s seventh population census,China’s floating population is 375816759.Compared with the sixth national census in 2010,the floating population increased by154390107,an increase of 69.73%.It shows that the trend of Chinese migration is constantly obvious, and the scale of population flow is expanding. With the development of the economy, the consumption structure of Chinese residents has undergone major changes,no longer only pursuing material consumption, but also pursuing spiritual consumption based on enjoymentoriented consumption.Whether the change in consumption is related to population flow is worth in-depth consideration, and consumption is an important factor in promoting economic growth,so it is of certain significance to study the relationship between population flow and household consumption. The main purpose of population movement is to pursue high income and improve living conditions, and the level of regional economic development is an important basis for influencing whether the population chooses to move. Therefore, this thesis explores whether population migration has different effects on household consumption from both theoretical and empirical aspects.According to the selected variables, this thesis collects panel data from 30 provinces(excluding Tibet)from 2007 to 2021,and uses the benchmark regression model to study the impact of population migration on household consumption from two aspects: net population inflow and net population outflow, and finds that net population inflow will promote the consumption of residents in the inflow area, and the net outflow of population will inhibit the consumption of residents in the outflow area.Using the mediation effect model,it is found that there are mediating effects between net population inflow and household consumption, and between net population outflow and household consumption. The threshold model is used to study the nonlinear impact of population flow on household consumption, and the economic development level is used as the threshold variable, and it is found that there are economic development level threshold characteristics of net population inflow and net outflow on household consumption. With the improvement of economic development level, the impact of net population inflow on household consumption has always had a positive promotion effect, and the impact effect has been significantly enhanced, while the net outflow of population has a significant negative inhibitory effect on household consumption. The innovation points of this thesis are mainly reflected in: first, the previous literature mainly studies the impact of population flow on household consumption from the perspective of consumption concept and income level, and less from the perspective of regional economic development level difference.Second, domestic and foreign scholars mainly study the impact of population flow on household consumption from a linear perspective, and rarely study the nonlinear impact of population flow on household consumption,in addition, linear regression does not show the heterogeneity between the two and whether there is a structural mutation problem,so this thesis uses the threshold model to investigate the structural mutation problem of population flow on household consumption.Third, because consumption has inertial characteristics, that is,the consumption of the latter period will be affected by the consumption of the previous period, this thesis incorporates the lag period of consumption level into the model as an explanatory variable, and uses the dynamic threshold model to investigate the relationship between the two.Based on the above research results, this thesis puts forward several policy suggestions, first, vigorously implement the talent plan in economically underdeveloped areas, such as: the implementation of housing subsidies, rental subsidies, education and training and other measures,to train and deliver high-end talents for economically underdeveloped areas, promote the economic development of economically underdeveloped areas, and improve the situation of talent drain. The second is to increase the supply of public services in the areas where the population flows in,and ensure that the inflow population has the same public services as the local population. The third is to expand the employment affordability of the inflow areas, reduce the risk of unemployment of the floating population, appropriately raise the basic salary level, establish a labor market system, and enable the inflow population to compete fairly with the local population for jobs. The fourth is to change the consumption concept of the floating population through the Internet and other communication methods, adhere to the principle of fairness to protect their consumption rights and interests, and expand the consumption demand of the floating population.
