In recent years,China has paid more and more attention to the development of rural areas, and has successively carried out strategies such as poverty alleviation and rural revitalization to promote the development of rural economy,so that the income level of rural residents has increased year by year, but there is still a problem of unbalanced development between urban and rural economies, and there is still a large gap between urban and rural income. As a new economic form, the digital economy can compress the spatial distance between urban and rural areas, enhance economic exchanges between urban and rural areas, and thus affect the income gap between urban and rural areas.Today,China’s digital economy ranks second in the world, accounting for nearly 40% of GDP.In the context of the current era of digital economy, exploring the impact of digital economy on the income gap between urban and rural areas has certain practical significance, and can provide policy suggestions for narrowing the income gap between urban and rural areas and promoting the common prosperity of urban and rural residents. This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the digital economy on the income gap between urban and rural areas.Firstly, the relevant research is summarized, and the relevant literature at home and abroad is sorted out from three aspects: digital economy, urbanrural income gap and the impact of digital economy on urban-rural income gap. Then, from a theoretical perspective, the mechanism of digital economy affecting the income gap between urban and rural areas is analyzed. Then, the digital economy index system is constructed from the three aspects of digital industrialization, industrial digitalization and digital infrastructure, and the vertical and horizontal grade method is used to measure the development level of digital economy, and on this basis, the current situation of China’s digital economy development is analyzed. At the same time, the Thiel index method is used to measure the urban-rural income gap,and the current situation of urban-rural income gap in China is analyzed. Finally, using the panel data of 30 provinces and municipalities in China from 2011 to 2020,a spatial Dubin model is constructed to empirically analyze the impact of digital economy on urban-rural income gap,and further analyze the impact of eastern, central and western regions.Based on the influence mechanism and empirical results of digital economy on urban-rural income gap, this thesis mainly draws the following conclusions: first, although the level of digital economy development in China has maintained a trend of increasing year by year, the overall level is low; From a sub-regional perspective, the level of digital economy development is from high to eastern, central and western; The current situation of urban-rural income gap in China is exactly the opposite of the development of the digital economy.First, the development of China’s digital economy can narrow the urban-rural income gap between local and neighboring provinces.Second, there is regional heterogeneity in the impact of digital economy development on the income gap between urban and rural areas, and the impact of the eastern and central regions is consistent with that of the whole country, but there are differences in the impact effect. The development of the digital economy in the western region will lead to a widening of the urban-rural income gap between the local region and neighboring provinces. Finally, this thesis puts forward three policy recommendations: first, strengthen the construction of rural digital infrastructure;Second, improve the digital literacy of rural residents;Third, promote the integrated development of the digital economy and traditional agriculture;Fourth, improve the data governance system;Fifth, formulate strategies for the development of the digital economy according to local conditions.
