Realizing common prosperity is the essential requirement of socialism with Chinese characteristics, but the large income difference between urban and rural residents will not only reduce people’s sense of well-being,but also hinder the completion of the goal of socialist common prosperity. Therefore, how to effectively reduce China’s urban-rural income gap has become an important topic of concern in all sectors of society recently. As an important subject of public human capital investment, our government’s investment in education is an important redistribution means to promote the balanced development of national society.Under the guidance of the goal of common prosperity, the paper studies the impact of public education investment on the urban-rural income gap.Firstly,it systematically combs the relevant literature research and theoretical knowledge of public education investment and urban-rural income gap,and defines the main research content of this paper.Secondly,it makes a brief analysis of China’s public education investment and the income and gap between urban and rural residents. The research shows that the scale of China’s public education investment has always maintained a growth trend. At the same time, the urban-rural income gap between provinces and cities in China also shows the phenomenon of "high in the West and low in the East".Finally, using the panel data of 30 provinces and cities in China from 2002 to 2019,the results show that China’s public education investment can significantly reduce the urban-rural income gap,and this impact gradually increases from the east to the West;compared with the investment in basic education and higher education, the investment in secondary education has a more obvious impact on reducing the income gap between urban and rural areas in various regions of China;China’s urban-rural income gap shows the characteristics of spatial correlation, and the spatial effect of public education investment on urban-rural income gap shows obvious regional differences: the direct effect of public education investment on urban-rural income gap in eastern China is significantly negative, while the indirect effect of public education investment on urban-rural income gap in central and western China is significantly negative. Therefore, the paper puts forward policy suggestions from four aspects: the scale of public education investment, the structure of public education investment, the allocation of educational resources and the role of the government,in order to reduce the urban-rural income gap between provinces and cities in China.
